Lovely photos!  I liked the San Diego ones best because of all the greenery.  You can't lose with palm trees!

Somebody needs to push the 3/4 over to be inline with the 3 and 4.   Nice photos though!

Great picture! Where exactly along US 219 is this dual bridge located at? Is there an official vantage point where you took the picture?

It's over Cattaraugus Creek, at the Erie/Cattaraugus County line, about 3 mi from the south end of the freeway.

This picture was taken during construction in an area that may be fenced off now.  There is a deck truss immediately to the west of this bridge that carried US-219 before the freeway opened (that is impressive in its own right) that would offer a good vantage point of these arch bridges.  Someone wanting a good photo could probably access this location if they parked their car and did a little bit of bushwhacking.

Nice photos.  Why can't I look at something like this on my daily commute here in NJ:

http://www.asphaltplanet.ca/CA/CA/57/index.html
If the mountains were Photoshopped out, it might be a bit closer to what I'm used to seeing.

^ This isn't anything like what I am used to seeing.  I booked a flight to LA for early December the other day, and am pretty stoked to get to see this again.

^ This isn't anything like what I am used to seeing.  I booked a flight to LA for early December the other day, and am pretty stoked to get to see this again.

With the exception of seven years in Hawaii (1979-1986), I lived in the Los Angeles area from my birth to 2004 (when I moved to Phoenix). I was born just a few miles from that stretch of the 57 (somewhere in the background of that picture is the first house I lived in), although at that time (1961), it and the I-210 were just lines on some highway engineer's map. When I was about four or five, we moved to La Canada Flintridge (you probably went through it on the 210; it's where Angeles Crest Highway and the California 2 Freeway meet the 210).

Perhaps this trip, try a drive up Angeles Crest Highway (not on a weekend, though). If you think you might stop along the way for  walking, purchase an Adventure Pass for Angeles National Forest. A sporting goods store called Sports Chalet at the bottom of Angeles Crest Highway at Foothill Boulevard will have them. Drive far enough up, you'll be in pine tree-covered mountains maybe 20 or 30 air-miles from the skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles. It's a whole different world up there; you wouldn't think the United States' second largest city and its suburban sprawl is so close. Just remember: to see the pine trees, you have to get about 5000 feet above sea level, so don't be too disappointed when you drive past the huge ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST sign just out of La Canada and there's not a single tree to be seen. Continue another 25 miles.

I've heard good things about the Angeles Crest Highway from other people as well, and have been thinking about giving it a try.  I understand it is sometimes closed due to snow during the winter time, but according to Caltrans it seems to still be open at this point.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Some recent photo updates from both Michigan and California:

The first pic looks similar to the gantry style Ontario uses.

I like the use of the flags on the BGSs.

While I will always prefer shields...  the flags look neat, and they're probably much easier to decipher for the average motorist than if a foreign shield (in this case ON 402) were to be placed where the flag is.
