The lone east-west state route in Washington County, Alabama 56 begins near State Line, Mississippi as it extends from Mississippi 42. The two lane highway travels to the county seat of Chatom, where it meets Alabama 17. East from there, Alabama 56 concludes at U.S. 43 in Wagarville.

Alabama 56 was the original route ofr U.S. 84 between Chatom and U.S. 43 until in the 1950s.
