State Route 222

An unsigned route, California 222 is Talmage Road between U.S. 101 (Redwood Highway) and Talmage in the vicinity of Ukiah. The 2.15 mile long route crosses the Russian River.

California 222 is an unsigned route. It begins at U.S. 101 in Ukiah and ends at Sanford Ranch Road/East Side Road in Talmage. We start at the U.S. 101 interchange (note 222/101 separation sign) in the city of Ukiah, which is the seat of Mendocino County and is located at 610 feet elevation and reaches an annual average of 36.96 inches of rain.

Ukiah became county seat when Mendocino County split from Sonoma County in 1859; Ukiah incorporated in 1876. Home to 15,497 people as of the 2000 Census, Ukiah is another major wine-producing region and is home to the Mendocino Brewing Company (which was formerly the Hopland Brewing Company). Eastbound California 222 has a loop ramp that connects to U.S. 101 north.

The only bridge along California 222 is a long one; it carries the state highway over the Russian River, which flows between Ukiah and Talmage. Built in 1964, the bridge features old style concrete guardrails that are common from that period of construction.

California 222 east ends at the next intersection, which is Sanford Ranch Road to the north and East Side Road south. East Side Road is a through route that follows the east side of the Russian River, joining U.S. 101 south of Hopland.

Two postmiles for unsigned California 222 are posted at the east end of the state highway: one on the north side of the street and another on the south side of the street for eastbound traffic. The gates of the monastery can be seen in the distance.
