Hillsborough County Road 589 - Sheldon Rd / Citrus Park Dr

Hillsborough County Road 589

Hillsborough County Road 589 is an urban arterial following Sheldon Road and Citrus Park Drive between Town 'n' Country and Citrus Park west of Tampa. The route runs 5.49 miles north from SR 580 (Hillsborough Avenue) at Memorial Highway (CR 576) to CR 587 (Gunn Highway) by Citrus Park Mall.

A second section of County Road 589 follows the Citrus Park Drive extension. The four lane boulevard runs 2.73 miles west from Sheldon Road at Citrus Park to Countryway Boulevard in the Westchase community.

The extension of Citrus Park Drive west from Sheldon Road to Deer Park Elementary School opened to traffic on January 14, 2022. Costing $51.7 million,1 the project was scheduled for completion by Summer 2021, then late 2021, but delayed due to supply chain issues with components for traffic signals added at Deer Park Elementary and Fawn Ridge Boulevard.2 Work on the project commenced in early August 2019, over a year behind schedule.

Prior to construction of the Veterans Expressway (SR 589), SR 589 followed an L-shaped route around Tampa International Airport (TPA). The southern leg followed Columbus Drive, Boy Scout Boulevard and Spruce Street west from U.S. 92 (Dale Mabry Highway) to SR 60 (Memorial Highway). The west leg spurred north from SR 60 along Eisenhower Boulevard to a trumpet interchange with SR 580 (Hillsborough Avenue). Eisenhower Boulevard was incorporated into the limited access toll road while SR 589 east from SR 60 to U.S. 92 was renumbered to SR 616. CR 589 along Sheldon Road remained unchanged.
