Collier County Road 856 branches west from SR 84 (Davis Boulevard) along Radio Road to the east of Naples. The tree lined boulevard ties into CR 31 (Airport-Pulling Road) across from the passenger terminal at Naples Airport (APF).
Historically Radio Road was a part of an extended route of Florida Secondary 858. S-858 navigated along a stair stepped route in 1959 south from S-846 (Immokalee Road) via Collier Boulevard, Radio Road and Airport-Pulling Road. The route continued from U.S. 41 via Bayshore Drive south, Thomasson Drive west and Hamilton Avenue south.
All of S-858 south of Immokalee Road was renumbered by 1976. Radio Road changed to S-856, Collier Boulevard to S-951 and the remainder from Airport-Pulling Road southward as S-31.

CR 881 (Livingston Road) stems 12.5 miles north from CR 856 (Radio Road) to the Lee County line.
