Route 34

The freeway for Route 34 (Richard C. Lee Connector) ends prematurely at Church Street in Downtown New Haven. Until 2014, traffic merged onto a pair of frontage roads along a wide right-of-way intended for a never built westward extension of the Connector to Derby Avenue and Route 122 (Forest Road) in West Haven.1 A portion of unused roadway for Route 34 was demolished at that time. Route 34 overall travels 24.37 miles miles between New Haven and Newtown.
The Richard C. Lee Connector extended as far west as York Street at the Yale New Haven Hospital. Known then as the Oak Street Connector, the freeway spur opened to traffic in 1960.1
The Mixmaster Interchange joining the east end of Route 34 with I-91 and I-95 was rebuilt as part of the I-95 New Haven Harbor Crossing Corridor Improvement Program underway from 2010 to 2017. Construction included replacing left exit ramps to Route 34 with flyovers departing from the right.
