State Route 896 Business

Delaware State Route 896 Business

SR 896 Business follows the old alignment prior to 1993 of SR 896 through Glasgow while SR 896 bypasses the unincorporated community to the east. Following Glasgow Avenue, the two lane road serves Hodgson Vocational Technical High School, Peoples Square Shopping Center, and several subdivisions to the southwest. The south end of SR 896 Business ties into the SR 896 intersection with Porter Road, where an interchange was once proposed. The north end of Glasgow Avenue is accessible from SR 896 southbound only, with the northbound lane ending at a turnaround ahead of Muddy Run.

A study funded in the WILMAPCO Fiscal Year 2014 recommended redesigning SR 896 Business into a "main street", with less emphasis on Glasgow Avenue as a through road. Outlined in the 2011 Hazard Elimination Program (HEP), construction expanded Glasgow Avenue north at the intersection with U.S. 40 (Pulaski Highway) east to provide an additional through lane and a bike lane. Additional work converted the signal from U.S. 40 west to Glasgow Avenue south to a protected turn, and restriped U.S. 40 east to include a dedicated left turn lane. A channelized island was also added for the eastbound turn from SR 896 Business north to U.S. 40. Construction was completed in fall 2016.1
