An 18.9 mile stretch of former U.S. 6 between Wilton and Davenport in eastern Iowa was assigned as Historic U.S. 6 in 2012. The two-lane road was redesignated as Iowa 927 in 1980 when U.S. 6 was relocated north onto Interstates 80 and 280. Iowa 927 was assigned until July 1, 2003, when maintenance was turned over to local control and the route was reassigned as County Road F58.
The relocation of U.S. 6 was done in an effort to move through traffic away from the stretch through Wilton, Durant and Walcott. However the towns appeared lost with U.S. 6 no longer connecting them. An effort blossomed with the mayors of the respective cities coming together in agreement to post signs touting the route as Historic U.S. 6. The results of their summit meeting with the Route 6 Tourist Association led to the installation of eight signs along the route in June 2012.1
