Interstate 80 East Express

Construction at the East System Interchange with I-80/U.S. 6 was completed in Fall 2019. Work rebuilt the previous three-wye interchange with left exit ramps into a high speed exchange with multiple flyovers. 05/08/22

I-29/U.S. 6 combine with Interstate 80 along the Local roadway east for 2.25 miles. 05/08/22
Proceeding east, the I-29/80 Local roadway meets S 24th Street at a diamond interchange (Exit 50) in a half mile. 05/08/22
Exit 1 B was renumbered to Exit 50 along the I-29/80 Local roadway when the Express roadway for I-80 was completed. S 24th Street is an arterial route linking the freeway with U.S. 275/MSR 92 to the south and the Mid-America Center retail complex and 23rd Avenue to the north. 05/08/22
Completed in Fall 2024, the S 24th Street overpass was the first project completed in the Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvement Project.1 05/08/22
Four sculptures varying in height from 46 to 61 feet adorn the ends of the 24th Street Bridge. Odyssey is the work of artist Albert Paley.2 05/08/22
The southern leg of Iowa 192 followed S Expressway from the couplet of 6th/7th Streets in Downtown Council Bluffs to I-29/80 at Exit 49 (old Exit 3). The state highway was decommissioned here in 2018. 05/08/22
The folded diamond interchange (Exit 49) with S Expressway was also reconstructed during the Council Bluffs Interstate System Improvement Program. S Expressway continues from I-29/80 south to U.S. 275/MSR 92 near Lake Manawa State Park. 05/08/22

Interstate 80 travels 119 miles east from I-29 to the West Mixmaster Interchange with I-35/235 in West Des Moines. I-29 heads 116 miles south to converge with U.S. 59/71 at I-229 south into St. Joseph, Missouri. 05/08/22
Under construction from July 2014 to September 2019, the East Systems Interchange project also added separate entrance ramps for I-29 south and I-80 east from the exchange with S Expressway. 05/08/22
Traffic from S Expressway combines with Exit 48 ahead of the flyover spanning I-29 and the adjacent Iowa Interstate Railroad, Council Bluffs Yard. 05/08/22
