Combining with U.S. 190 east from IH 14, IH 35 north lowers to cross Nolan Creek ahead of Exit 294A with Central Avenue (former SS 253) west in Belton.

SS 253 was established in 1952 with the construction of “new” US 81 (IH 35) away from Main Street in Belton. Spur 253 connected the freeway road with Main Street (SH 317), 0.616 miles to the west in Downtown Belton. SS 253 was removed from the state highway system in 2007, with maintenance of Central Avenue turned over to the city of Belton.

I-35 Project 2B through Temple consolidated separate ramps for SS 290 and Bellaire North into a single exit ahead of the BNSF Railroad underpass. Six to eight lane expansion of IH 35, 7.56 mile miles north from Midway Drive to North Loop 363 cost $243.1 million and was underway from 2013 to Summer 2019.¹
