A two-wye interchange with high speed ramps at Exit 48 connects I-84/U.S. 6 east with Capitol Avenue adjacent to the Connecticut State Capitol and Asylum Street by Bushnell Park. 05/30/22

Had it been completed, Interstate 484 would have tied into the exchange at Exit 48 from a tunnel through Bushnell Park. Utilizing Whitehead Highway east from Pulaski Circle, I-484 was to provide connectivity from I-84 east to I-91 south.1 05/30/22

A half diamond interchange (Exit 49) links I-84/U.S. 6 east with Chapel Street east from High Street to Anne Uccello Street on the north side of Downtown Hartford. 05/30/22
Curving northeast over an elevated roadway by Hartford Union Station, I-84 advances east past High Street to Exit 51 for I-91 north to Springfield, Massachusetts and Exit 52 for I-91 south to New Haven. 05/30/22

A split diamond interchange at Exit 50 joins Interstate 84 with parallel Chapel and Morgan Streets between Trumbull Street and the Bulkekey Bridge. 05/30/22
U.S. 44 follows Main Street southeast from Albany Avenue to Morgan Street and Interstate 84. Exit 52 for I-91 south was added to the adjacent systems exchange in 1990.1 05/30/22
I-84/U.S. 6 enter a tunnel below Trumbull Street and U.S. 44 (Main Street) just ahead of Exits 51/52. I-91 straddles the Connecticut River west banks though Downtown Hartford. 05/30/22

U.S. 44 joins I-84/U.S. 6 eastbound from the Morgan Street S entrance ramp. U.S. 44 parts ways following a 0.23 mile long overlap onto Connecticut Boulevard at Exit 53. 05/30/22

I-84/U.S. 6-44 leave Downtown Hartford across the Morgan G. Bulkeley Bridge spanning the Connecticut River. U.S. 44 follows Connecticut Boulevard 1.02 miles east to Main Street north into the Downtown Main Street Historic District. 05/30/22

I-84/U.S. 6 angle southeast to Exit 55 for Route 2. U.S. 6 stays on I-84 east to Exit 60 in Manchester. 05/30/22
Route 2 originates at the intersection of State Street and Columbus Boulevard in Downtown Hartford. Spanning the Connecticut River on the Founders Bridge, Route 2 ties into I-84/U.S. 6 at overlapping directional T interchanges (Exits 55/56). 05/30/22
Route 2 turns south at Exit 55 along a freeway leading to Glastonbury, Marlborough and New London. Providing part of a route southeast to New London, Route 11 branches south from Route 2 at Colchester. 05/30/22
Left Exit 56 joins I-84/U.S. 6 east with Route 500, a 0.51 mile long freeway spur north to Governor Street by Downtown East Hartford. The spur was part of the cancelled route of Interstate 284 leading north to I-291 in South Windsor. 05/30/22
The Mixmaster Interchange joining I-84/U.S. 6, Route 2 and Route 500 was completed in October 1965. I-284 was designated in place of Route 500 between 1976 and 1983.2 05/30/22

I-84/U.S. 6 next converge with the east end of Route 15 (Wilbur Cross Highway) at a wye interchange overlapping the parclo interchange (Exit 58) with Roberts Street (Route 518). 05/30/22

Exit 58 departs I-84/U.S. 6 for Roberts Street (Route 518) between Silver Lane (Route 502) and Hillside Street. Silver Lane parallels I-84 east by Rentschler Field, home of UCONN Huskies football. Hillside Street north leads to U.S. 44 (Burnside Avenue). 05/30/22
Route 15 branches northeast from I-91 in Hartford alongside U.S. 5 across the Charter Oak Bridge. U.S. 5 follows Main Street north across I-84 while Route 15 concludes at I-84 ahead of Interstate 384. 05/30/22
I-84/U.S. 6 eastbound expand to six lanes from Route 15 to Interstate 384 at Exit 59. Interstate 384 comprises an 8.53 mile long spur east to Manchester and Bolton. 05/30/22

The I-84 eastbound carpool lane separates from the mainline ahead of the two-wye interchange (Exit 59) with I-384. Bypassing Manchester, I-384 connects with U.S. 6/44 in Bolton. U.S. 6 continues east from there to Willimantic and Providence, Rhode Island. 05/30/22
The bypass around Manchester was completed in 1974 and signed as part of a realignment of I-84 east to Providence, Rhode Island. I-384 was established formally in 1984 following the cancellation of plans for I-84 east beyond Willimantic.3 05/30/22
A flyover links the HOV-2 lane along I-84 east with I-384 separate from Exit 59. I-384 temporarily ended just south of I-84 at Silver Lane (Route 502) until 1986.3 05/30/22

The carpool lane partitions into ramps for I-84 and I-384 as the general travel lanes advance 0.75 miles to the parclo interchange (Exit 60) with the departure of U.S. 6 east onto U.S. 44 east (Middle Turnpike W). The east end of I-291 follows in 1.25 miles at Exit 61. 05/30/22
U.S. 44 runs west along Wickham Park into East Hartford, where Middle Turnpike W becomes Burnside Avenue. 05/30/22
I-84/U.S. 6 east cross the Manchester town line 0.33 miles ahead of Exit 60 to U.S. 44 (Middle Turnpike W). Following Center Street through Central Manchester, U.S. 6/44 overlap 6.90 miles east to Bolton Notch. 05/30/22
Interstate 291 angles northwest from a directional T interchange (Exit 61) to the immediate north of U.S. 44 (Middle Turnpike W). 05/30/22
Interstate 72 East
Crossing the Connecticut River on the Captain John Bissell Bridge between South Windsor and Windsor, I-291 constitutes a northeasterly bypass of Hartford 6.02 miles west from I-84 to I-91 and Route 218 (Putnam Highway). Cancelled plans extended I-291 west to Farmington and south to Rocky Hill as a beltway. 05/30/22
