Interstate 86 overlays New York Route 17 along the Southern Tier Expressway for 205 miles east from the Pennsylvania state line at the town of Mina to Jamestown, Corning, Elmira and U.S. 220 at South Waverly, Pennsylvania. The succeeding 39.5 mile stretch of Route 17 east from U.S. 220 to Owego, Endicott, Johnson City and I-81 in Binghamton is a part of Future I-86. With the completion of the Prospect Mountain Construction Project at I-81/NY 17 in 2020, it is expected that I-86 will be designated along this stretch. Some I-86 shields were posted on this section by August 2021.

I-81 and NY 17 overlap 4.5 miles east from Binghamton to Kirkwood. NY 17 branches east from there to Windsor alongside a 9.9 mile long section of Interstate 86 designated on May 1, 2006. The remaining 121 miles of NY 17 travel southeast from NY 79 to I-87 (New York Thruway) by Harriman.
