A trumpet interchange (Exit 18) joins I-87 (New York Thruway) with NY 299 west to New Paltz and east to Poughkeepsie in one mile.

Originally opened as part of the Maybrook Railroad Line in 1889, the steel cantilever span across the Hudson River between Highland and Poughkeepsie was converted by 2009 into the Walkway Over the Hudson, the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world.1

Not acknowledged on guide signs along I-87, the trumpet interchange and access road at Exit 19 links with Interstate 587, a 1.23 mile long spur into Kingston along Colonel George Chandler Drive.

The access road from Exit 19 ties into a roundabout with I-587/NY 28 east and Washington Avenue (NY 981K) south into the city of Kingston and, NY 28 west to U.S. 209 in the town of Ulster.
