The second business loop for Interstate 196 heading north travels 11.6 miles northward between Exits 44 and 55. The business route served downtown Holland directly via a cosign with former U.S. 31 Business along Washington Avenue, Michigan Avenue, River Avenue north to 8th Street (former M-21). Business Loop I-196 exited Holland for Zeeland along Chicago Drive. This alignment was removed from state control in 2004 and Business Loop I-196 shifted onto the U.S. 31 bypass of Holland to Zeeland. Signs were not made consistent along U.S. 31 until 2009.1
