Interstate 270 Spur
Officially Interstate 270Y, the 2.10 mile route of I-270 Spur links Interstates 270 and 495 in Montgomery County. The route of I-270 takes the freeway southeast to a wye interchange, with access onto I-495 east (inner) and from I-495 west (outer). I-270 Spur provides access to I-495 south (outer) into Northern Virginia and from I-495 north (inner).
Interstate 270 Spur came into existence when Interstate 270 was designated in place of Interstate 70S in 1973. Before that transition, the spur route was the entirety of I-270. It should be noted also that a late 1970s official Virginia map showed the spur as I-470.
Spur - North
Interstate 270 Spur departs Interstate 495 from a wye interchange and approaches its lone interchange. Signed as Exit 1, a parclo interchange links the freeway with Democracy Boulevard. The east-west surface arterial spurs west of MD 187 (Old Georgetown Road) to Westfield Montgomery Mall and Cabin John Regional Park among other places.

The left lane of Interstate 270 Spur transitions into an HOV-2 lane ahead of Exit 1 for Democracy Boulevard. The HOV lane continues to Interstate 270 west.

The Democracy Boulevard off-ramp (Exit 1) departs Interstate 270 Spur northbound. Democracy Boulevard travels 3.8 miles westward to MD 189 (Falls Road) and Glen Road at the suburb of Potomac.

This sign dedicates Interstate 270 to Senator Charles "Mac" Mathias. The retired senator was known for his work in the restoration effort of Chesapeake Bay.

Fernwood Road west and Westlake Terrace east come together above Interstate 270S just north of Exit 1. Left side ramps connect the arterials above to the HOV lane north and from the HOV lane south.

The HOV ramp merges onto Interstate 270 Spur north beside a sign for The I-270 Technology Corridor. The Corridor pertains to the stretch of I-270 between Washington, D.C. and Frederick where a large concentration of high-tech businesses and government agencies reside.
