Interstate 565 is a 23 mile freeway spur between Decatur and Interstate 65 and the city of Huntsville. The freeway opened to traffic fully by October 1991. The route was initially signed as a north-south highway, but officials changed the cardinal directions to east-west by December 1991.1 19.2 miles of Interstate 565 were approved by the Department of Transportation in 1969.2
