Interstate 684

Interstate 684 constitutes a commuter freeway linking I-84 in Putnam County with I-287 (Cross Westchester Expressway) at White Plains and Hutchinson River Parkway south toward New York City. Traveling 29 miles, I-684 runs north from Purchase to Rye Lake. Between NY 120 (Exit 2) and NY 22 (Exit 3), I-684 passes through portion of Greenwich, Connecticut, though without any local access. Northward, I-684 traverses timberland and suburban areas through the towns of Bedford, Somers and Southeast. NY 22 extends the freeway north from I-684 a short distance to U.S. 202 and East Branch Reservoir.

Designated as I-87, the initial stretch of Interstate 684 extended north from White Plains to NY 22 (Bedford Road) within the town of North Castle in 1968.
Interstate 684 was numbered in place of the original I-87 loop from the New York Thruway east between Elmsford and Newburgh. The designation was approved by the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) on October 26, 1969.
