Route 4

New Jersey Route 4

New Jersey Route 4 travels 10.59 miles east from Broadway and Route 20 (McLean Boulevard) in Paterson east to the exchange joining Interstate 95 with U.S. 1/9/46 and U.S. 9W (Fletcher Avenue) in Fort Lee. With the exception of the westernmost stretch along Broadway in the boroughs of Elmwood Park and Fair Lawn, Route 4 is a controlled access arterial or expressway.

Route 4 overtakes the expressway along Route 208 from Broadway in Fair Lawn east across the Saddle River into the borough of Paramus. Route 4 meets Route 17 at a cloverstack interchange east of the Garden State Parkway. Curving south at River Edge, Route 4 enters northern reaches of Hackensack ahead of The Shops at Riverside retail center.

Crossing the Hackensack River, Route 4 continues east into Teaneck Township. Beyond Teaneck Road, right in right out (RIRO) ramps and businesses access precede the exchange with CR 501 (Grand Avenue) in the city of Englewood. Route 4 arcs southward from Grand Avenue into Fort Lee ahead of Interstate 95.
