Route 4

New Jersey Route 4 travels 10.59 miles east from Broadway and Route 20 (McLean Boulevard) in Paterson east to the exchange joining Interstate 95 with U.S. 1/9/46 and U.S. 9W (Fletcher Avenue) in Fort Lee. With the exception of the westernmost stretch along Broadway in the boroughs of Elmwood Park and Fair Lawn, Route 4 is a controlled access arterial or expressway.
Route 4 overtakes the expressway along Route 208 from Broadway in Fair Lawn east across the Saddle River into the borough of Paramus. Route 4 meets Route 17 at a cloverstack interchange east of the Garden State Parkway. Curving south at River Edge, Route 4 enters northern reaches of Hackensack ahead of The Shops at Riverside retail center.
Crossing the Hackensack River, Route 4 continues east into Teaneck Township. Beyond Teaneck Road, right in right out (RIRO) ramps and businesses access precede the exchange with CR 501 (Grand Avenue) in the city of Englewood. Route 4 arcs southward from Grand Avenue into Fort Lee ahead of Interstate 95.
Route 208 concludes at a wye interchange with Route 4 (Broadway) east. A service road for Broadway joins Route 4 eastbound with Saddle River Road (CR 79) south in Fair Lawn.

Route 4 passes under Paramus Road (CR 62) a half mile ahead of the collector distributor roadway leading to the cloverstack interchange with Route 17.

Route 4 eastbound advances with four lanes to Garden State Parkway, where the c/d roadway separates for Garden State Plaza mall and Route 17.

The turn off from the Route 4 c/d roadway for Garden State Plaza Boulevard to Garden State Plaza mall follows the entrance ramp from the Garden State Parkway northbound.

Route 17 constitutes an expressway leading south from Route 4 in Paramus to Rochelle Park Township and Interstate 80 at Lodi and Hackensack.
