New Jersey Route 17 extends 26.81 miles south from Interstate 287 near the New York State line to Route 7 / County Route 506 (Belleville Turnpike) between Kearny and North Arlington. Route 17 forms a multi state highway with NY 17 west from Suffern.
Commencing along Ridge Road, Route 17 runs north through the borough of North Arlington to Rutherford Avenue in Lyndhurst Township. Paralleling Route 3, Route 17 turns east along the Rutherford borough line to a directional cloverleaf interchange with the freeway along Route 3. Route 17 heads north through the exchange onto a six to eight lane boulevard into East Rutherford.
Following the Pascack Valley Line railroad to the west, Route 17 continues through Carlstadt, Wood-Ridge, Hasbrouck Heights to U.S. 46. With some access control, a barrier median separates the roadways along Route 17.
Entering the city of Hackensack, Route 17 separates into a couplet running along the outside of Interstate 80. The two diverge north at Lodi, with Route 17 resuming along an expressway into Maywood and Rochelle Park Township. The are no signalized intersections along the remainder of the state route north to I-287 at Mahwah Township.
