Route 440

New Jersey Route 440

Part of a multi state route, New Jersey Route 440 has two segments. Running from west to east, the 5.15 mile long southern section connects I-287 at Edison Township with the Outerbridge Crossing onto Staten Island, New York. The northern leg enters the Garden State north across the Bayonne Bridge, connecting the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Expressway in Richmond County with I-278 (Staten Island Expressway). New York Route 440 in New York City follows the West Shore Expressway and includes an overlap with I-278.

Construction on the freeway in Middlesex County kicked off in 1967. The interchange at the Garden State Parkway, I-287 north and County Route 514 was completed in 1970 and the remainder of the freeway by 1972 (Anderson, n.d.). The Hudson County section of Route 440 was planned as a freeway which was vastly unbuilt. The state route instead follows an at-grade arterial or expressway 8.18 miles north to U.S. 1/9 Truck in Jersey City.
