Highway 72

South Carolina Highway 72 is part of a multi state route with Georgia State Route 72 between Athens and Rock Hill. MSR 72 crosses the Savannah River into the Palmetto State east from Elberton to Calhoun Falls. The highway leads east to the Abbeville County seat of Abbeville.

East into Greenwood County, S.C. 72 travels to the city of Greenwood. A business route loops south toward the Greenwood city center while S.C. 72 passes between the Forest Lake and Cedar Lake communities to an overlap with U.S. 25/178. The 4.31 mile long route of S.C. 72 follows Reynolds Avenue east back to S.C. 72 where the highway leaves U.S. 25/178 and joins U.S. 221 northeast to Laurens County.

Beyond Lake Greenwood, U.S. 221 turns north from S.C. 72 to Laurens. MSR 72 continues northeast to Cross Hill, Mountville and Chester. S.C. 72 bypasses the city of Chester to the east alongside S.C. 56 while S.C. 72 Business runs through Downtown. S.C. 72 meets Interstate 26 on the northeast side of Chester while advancing east to Whitmire in Newberry County.

S.C. 72 overlaps with U.S. 176/S.C. 121 northeast from Whitmire 1.53 miles into Union County. The overlap of S.C. 72/121 continues east to Carlisle, where the two routes combine with S.C. 215 for 3.93 miles into Chester County. Continuing northeast, S.C. 72/121 travels to the city of Chester, where the highways form part of an arterial beltway along with U.S. 321 and S.C. 9.

S.C. 72/121 run north from Chester to S.C. 901 in the city of Rock Hill. S.C. 72 shifts north alongside S.C. 901 (Saluda Street) for 0.30 miles to S.C. 5 (Heckle Boulevard). S.C. 901 combines with S.C. 5 north while S.C. 72 remains along Saluda Street for 1.33 miles north to a shared end point with S.C. 122 (Johnston Street) at Elizabeth Lane outside Downtown Rock Hill.

East

S.C. 72 heads northeast from S.C. 56 along the Clinton city line to reenter the city limits at Corporate Center Drive and Clinton Park Corporate Center. The five lane boulevard next meets Interstate 26.
