U.S. 13 Alternate - Dover

U.S. 13 Alternate

U.S. 13 Alternate represents the alignment of U.S. 13 prior to 1952 through the city of Dover. The bannered route begins 0.3 miles north of the U.S. 13 Alternate branch through Camden. Following Governors Avenue, the Dover segment of U.S. 13 stays west of Dupont Highway from Lakeview Avenue to south Dover. Governors Avenue carries the route northward to Downtown, Wesley College and State Street ahead of Silver Lake. U.S. 13 Alternate follows Silver Street to U.S. 13 (N Dupont Highway) at Leipsic Road just south of Dover International Speedway and Delaware State University.

The Delaware State Highway Department petitioned the American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) for the establishment of U.S. 13 Alternate and U.S. 113 Alternate through Dover on April 11, 1951. Both routes were approved on June 8, 1951.

Initially U.S. 13 Alternate separated into a one way couplet along Governors Avenue southbound and State Street northbound. State Street north of Dupont Highway was also a part of U.S. 113 Alternate until 1974 as well.
