The Sidney Lanier Bridge approaches consist of lower level 120 foot spans supported by two column bents and high level 180 foot spans on a single bridge support. This phase of the bridge work cost $18.9 million1 and was completed by 1998.2

7,780 feet in length, the Sidney Lanier Bridge opened to traffic on April 7, 2003 after almost eight years of construction.3

The 1.5 mile long cable-stayed bridge was slated to open December 31, 2000.4

Delays ensued during bridge construction when a $1 million custom form traveler slipped loose while being fit in place. Injuring two workers, the device fell 185 feet onto a rock island. Six months were added to the project for its replacement.4

Additionally during construction, work was suspended anytime wind speeds exceeded 45 mph at the top of the tower cranes. The main span of the Sidney Lanier Bridge cost $65.5 million.2

A cable-stay design was selected for the Sidney Lanier Bridge based upon the success of the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Bridge completed in 1991 at Savannah.2 Dedicated on April 7, 2003, the span across the Brunswick River cost a total of $121 million.5
