U.S. 40 leaves a commercial strip on the east side of Elkton and enters New Castle County, Delaware below a transmission line corridor. The Barrington and Frenchtown Woods subdivisions follow the welcome sign along eastbound.

Sign bridges were added in all four directions leading into the intersection joining U.S. 40/SR 896 in 1994. Signs initially directed motorists bound for I-95 to use SR 896 north for the freeway south and U.S. 40 east to SR 1 north for the freeway north. Green outs changed this to simply reference SR 896 north to I-95 by 2001.

SR 896 runs north from U.S. 40 and Glasgow onto S College Avenue into the city of Newark. SR 896 is part of a multi state route with PA 896 northwest to Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
