The $338.6 million design-built contract for the Biloxi Bay Bridge was awarded by MDOT in June 2006 (LaFontaine, Baker, Perez, Newsom, 2007). The span opened to traffic with two lanes on November 1, 2007 (Mississippi Press, 2007).

The 1.6 mile long Biloxi Bay Bridge replaced the 1960s bridge toppled by the storm surge of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. The first piling for the new span was driven on September 23, 2006 (The Mississippi Press, 2008).
