U.S. 321A

U.S. 321A

U.S. 321A constitutes an 11.84 mile long loop west from U.S. 321 (Hickory Boulevard) through southern Caldwell County. U.S. 321A follows Main Street north through the town of Granite Falls. Continuing north, U.S. 321A serves the town of Sawmills and the town of Hudson along Main Street. Entering the city of Lenoir, U.S. 321A lines Norwood Street between Joyceton and Whitnel. The northern leg follows Mclean Drive back to U.S. 321.

U.S. 321A previously extended another 4.0 miles north through Lenoir. The route continued along Norwood Street north to Harper Avenue west and Main Street NW through Downtown Lenoir. U.S. 321A rejoined U.S. 321 via Main Street NW on the north side of the city. This alignment included an overlap with NC 18 Business on Harper Avenue and with NC 90 north from Norwood Street to U.S. 321. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) application to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) submitted on March 24, 2006 explained:

This application is sumitted to improve traffic flow by routing traffic around the downtown area. The current US 321 is a modern multilane highway and will serve the travelling public by easing congestion in the downtown area of Lenoir.
