U.S. 422 previously began along Ontario Street from Rockwell Avenue, which connected U.S. 6/20 west on Superior Street with the route south. Redevelopment of Cleveland Public Square included the removal of Ontario Street between Rockwell Avenue and S Roadway.

The first confirming markers for U.S. 422 and SR 8/14 were formerly posted along Ontario Street south of U.S. 6/20 (Superior Avenue). The routes are not marker now.

Prior to 1971, U.S. 21 overlapped with U.S. 422 south from Public Square along Ontario Street.
