SR 279 spurs 13.86 miles southwest from U.S. 191 outside Moab to the Intrepid solar evaporation mine and potash plant. Designated the Potash-Lower Colorado Scenic Byway, the state route wraps around Poison Spider Mesa (el. 4,692 feet), paralleling the Colorado River to Bootlegger Canyon. Turning back south from Gold Bar Canyon, SR 279 traverses the west side of the Colorado along a plateau to milepost 1.
