Virginia Route 101 runs along Hershberger Road 3.17 miles east from SR 117 (Peters Creek Road) near Washington Heights to U.S. 11 (Williamson Road) by Crossroads Corporate Business Center in the city of Roanoke. An expressway segment along Hershberger Road joins I-581/U.S. 220 with Aviation Drive between Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport (ROA) and Valley View Mall.

SR 101 was originally proposed as a full freeway between Roanoke and Salem. The exchange with Aviation Drive north and Valley View Boulevard NW south was the only aspect of that plan built.1
