Washington State Route 509 North
SR 509 begins at a single point urban interchange with South 21st Street and Interstate 705 near downtown Tacoma. The state route immediately crosses a cable stayed bridge over Thea Foss Waterway constructed in 1996 to replace the East 11th Street draw bridge to the north.1 08/29/06
Following a four lane causeway, SR 509 bisects an industrial area line with warehouses and railroad yards to the Portland Avenue half diamond interchange. 08/29/06
The first shield of SR 509 north posted along the 35.16 mile alignment. 08/29/06
Drivers bound for Portland Avenue depart SR 509 north (east). Portland Avenue leads south to the Salishan and Midland communities of east Tacoma and north along the Puyallup River to East 11th Street. 08/29/06
SR 509 spans the Puyallup River on the half mile approach to Port of Tacoma Road. 08/29/06
Passing over Milwaukee Way, SR 509 nears the Port of Tacoma Road slip ramp onto an adjacent frontage road. 08/29/06
Port of Tacoma Road connects industrial facilities northward to East 11th Street with Exit 136 of Interstate 5 and 20th Street East at Fife. 08/29/06
The frontage road parallels SR 509 east one quarter mile from the off-ramp to a parclo interchange with Port of Tacoma Road. 08/29/06
The SR 509 freeway ends and motorists merge with the frontage roads to a point near Taylor Way. A grassy median awaits a possible extension of the freeway eastward. 08/29/06
SR 509 (South Frontage Road) intersects Alexander Avenue near the Tacoma and Fife city line. The state route encircles Commencement Bay northward, remaining in Tacoma until Caledonia. 08/29/06
SR 509 leaves Des Moines Memorial Drive and joins a freeway leading north to Burien, White Center, and Seattle. 08/29/06
South 188th Street continues Des Moines Memorial Drive east from SR 509 to Exit 152 of Interstate 5. 08/29/06
Ramps from South 188th Street and Des Moines Memorial Drive combine to form the SR 509 freeway through Des Moines, SeaTac and Burien. An extension of the freeway southeast to Interstate 5 at Kent / SR 516) is planned. Upon completion of this four lane route, the surface alignment of SR 509 through Normandy Park and Des Moines will be decommissioned. 08/29/06
South 160th Street sees a parclo interchange with SR 509 at Five Corners in south Burien. 08/29/06
SR 509 passes over Des Moines Memorial Drive and enters the city of Burien. 08/29/06
The first of two Burien exits departs for South 160th Street. South 160th Street leads west from Des Moines Memorial Drive to Sunnydale and Gregory Heights. 08/29/06
Next in line for SR 509 north is the parclo interchange with SR 518. SR 518 comprises a 3.42 mile freeway linking SR 509 with Interstates 5 & 405 at Tukwila. 08/29/06
SR 518 provides the main access point to Seattle Tacoma International Airport from the Seattle area freeway network. The state route ends as SW 148th Street near the Burien city center at SR 509. 08/29/06
SR 518 is omitted at the ramp departure from SR 509 north in lieu of a sign showing the connections with Interstate 5 and Interstate 405 north. SR 518 becomes Interstate 405 north west of Renton. 08/29/06
Despite the fact that both SR 509 and 518 are freeways, signalized intersections facilitate the movements between the respective ramps. A flyover has been discussed in the past taking traffic from SR 509 south to SR 518 east, however there was no funding to complete the project. A new project to build a ramp from SR 518 east to Des Moines Memorial Dr is now planned in more recent times, therefore that would make the flyover much less likely due to space constraints. 08/29/06
