Interstate 95 Delaware – South
A traffic accident to the east resulted in a two-mile back up on Interstate 95 northbound in this scene ahead of SR 273 (Exit 3). 04/24/04
Two lanes parted ways with I-95 for Exit 3 to SR 273 west to Ogletown and east to Christiana. 08/18/05
2021/22 construction reconfigured the ramp to SR 273 west from I-95 south. Signs were replaced with Dover changed to Christiana. 12/19/20
When the Christiana Bypass along SR 273 opened in 1987, guide signs for Exit 3 were amended to include a trailblazer for U.S. 40. Dover remained referenced for SR 273 east to SR 1 south, which initially opened in 1991. 13. 12/19/20
Some of the older hexagonal shaped signs for the Delaware Turnpike Service Area remained in use until it closed for reconstruction on September 3, 2009. 03/28/04
The Delaware Service Area opened to travelers along with the Delaware Turnpike in the 1960s. It was replaced by a new facility, the Delaware House, in June 2010. 03/28/04
The left exit for the Delaware Turnpike Service Area departed from I-95 south at the Chapman Road overpass. 03/28/04
The sign bridge for the Delaware Welcome Center was removed during work to replace the Chapman Road overpass in 2022. 09/28/14
Adjacent to the service area on southbound is a interchange sequence sign for SR 896 (Exit 1), the Newark toll plaza, and MD 279 (Exit 109). This was the only indication of the forthcoming toll until the 2012 completion of the open road tolling lanes at the Newark toll plaza. 10/13/04
Replaced guide sign for SR 896 (College Avenue) on I-95 south. U.S. 301 was added to guide signs for Exit 1 A in 2001. 03/28/04
The "To Shore Points" placard on this sign was removed in April 2004 while the entire assembly was replaced by 2007. 12/19/07
Ground level signs referencing the open road tolling (ORT) lanes for the Newark Toll Plaza were removed by 2023. 08/27/21
Continuing west to within one mile of Exits 1 B/A with SR 896 (College Avenue). SR 896 south became part of U.S. 301 south in three miles at Glasgow. U.S. 301 ran south from there to Middletown and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. 05/30/04
The sign for SR 896 was carbon copied, including the redundant travel services placard, which preexisted the implementation of full sized services signs here in the late 1990s. 12/19/07

There was no indication of the upcoming Newark toll plaza outside of a sign advising motorists of E-ZPass lanes. U.S. 301 references for Exit 1 A were removed by 2012. 12/19/07
U.S. 301 and SR 896 previously parted ways at Mt. Pleasant, 11 miles south of Interstate 95. 12/19/07
SR 896 shield posted at the end of the loop ramp at Exit 1 A. Weaving traffic concerns between the on-ramp and following loop ramp to I-95 north often resulted in traffic delays here. 04/24/04
Advancing to the original Delaware Turnpike toll plaza west of the Welsh Tract Road overpass. The plaza included 20 booths until it was reconstructed between 2011-12 with open road tolling (ORT). 03/28/04
Some of the booths of the original Newark toll plaza were dedicated to E-ZPass account holders. Despite that, travel delays were routine, especially during the holiday season. 03/28/04
Passing through the original Delaware Turnpike toll barrier north of Iron Hill. Toll rates displayed here were $2.00 per passenger vehicle. Those increased to $3.00 in fall 2005 and $4.00 on October 1, 2007. 03/28/04
