Interstate 635 (the boring one)

Interstate 635 is an approximately 12 mile long bypass running to the west of downtown Kansas City. It is mostly in Kansas, but runs into Missouri as well. The entire route was recently reconstructed by KDOT in a $98 million project that also saw the rebuilding of its interchange with Interstate 70. Lets take a quick look at Interstate 635 in Kansas. The big arrow flower (Kansas City’s I-435)

Interstate 435 spends 80 miles circling Kansas City, and is one of the busiest roads in the metro area. It happens to be the world's fourth longest beltway with a single number (after Cincy, Berlin, and London). Recently, the busy southern portion of the route in Kansas was reconstructed, and parts of it are still being upgraded. Let's take a quick look at how KDOT is doing. As always click [...]

Painting red, white and blue green, new I-40 opens at Greensboro

New Interstate 40 Interstate 73, a road locally known as Painter Boulevard, is now open to traffic southwest of Greensboro. Traffic cones and other barriers were removed the morning of February 21, 2008 on the newest section of North Carolina Interstate, a 7.5-mile stretch of freeway between Future Interstate 73 & 840 near Piedmont Triad International Airport and Interstate 85 & Business Loop Interstate 85 south of the city. Interstate 85 south [...]

Clearview vs. Highway Gothic Primer

Jeff Royston passed along a photo from Oklahoma City showing that Oklahoma now is using Clearview font on its signs. The state joins a growing number of jurisdictions that are implementing the new font throughout their highway signs. This led me again to ponder the question of which states are using it and which are not. To address the issue, we have created a guide to catalog each state and [...]

A $1 billion project is underway in the state of Maryland along Interstate 95. Being constructed are the Interstate 95 Express Toll Lanes. Preview of new Interstate 795

First northbound shield for I-795. Photo taken December 16, 2007. I had the chance to check out and clinch the new Interstate 795 this week in North Carolina. With the early sunsets and low sun angle, I almost missed out, but for a preview of the northbound side of the freeway, see our new Interstate 795 guide. And for some photos covering the south end, see U.S. 70 [...]

Hurricane Katrina Recovery

This past weekend afforded me with the opportunity to check on the status of some upper Gulf Coast road projects related to the recovery from Hurricane Katrina. The August 29, 2005 landfall of the historic storm not only devastated the New Orleans and Mississippi coastal area homes and businesses, but also washed out several key stretches of highway infrastructure. Included in the storm's fury was the destruction of the U.S. [...]

New section of Interstate 99 to open

Officials hoped to open Interstate 99 on December 2, but a delay in the installation of highway signs pushed that date back to a time between December 12 and 19. When it opens, northbound drivers will be able to seamlessly travel from Bald Eagle to State College Skytop / Port Matilda along new freeway. Southbound drivers however must wait until mid-2008 to fully use the freeway, as crews continue to [...]

15 years later…

It was 1992 when I first noticed large mounds of dirt rising within the cloverleaf ramps of the Interstate 95 interchange with Delaware 7 and then fledgling-Delaware 1. The mounds were created in anticipation of a planned interchange upgrade between the Delaware Turnpike and new SR 1 Turnpike. 15 years later, the mounds remain, covered with vegetation and even a growing tree if I remember correctly. Delaware 1 [...]

New pages and updates at AARoads

I've spent the last 6 weeks or so working through a mammoth backlog going back to 2004 in an effort to update existing pages and create new sections of the website. Now online is a fledgling Michigan page with a handful of photos from our Interstate 80 trip in September 2005 and Carter Buchanan's November 2004 Midwest trip. These trips also represent the bulk of the Ohio updates that now [...]
