Accepting a roll of coins from an unknown customer is like playing with fire–a roll of quarters might have $10 in it, or it might have every other coin be a penny.

As I recall, the teller split the roll open into the drawer before I walked away.

Protocol at the casino was to pop the roll open and actually count before paying the customer out. Which was really funny the few times someone would hand you a gaffed roll of quarters and you'd get to say "$9.25, here you go!" and they'd turn several different colors but never actually say anything because they knew you caught them.

Generally casino and bank employees are much faster at counting change from experience than retail and food service employees, though. If a, say, Burger King cashier were to try that they'd probably make a lot of people angry because of how much it held up the line.

Just curious ... you didn't have coin-counting machines for this?  Or did the casino protocol pretty much demand the "human touch"?

For most of the time I was there, there was only one of them in the whole casino, so if you were at one of the three counters that didn't have one, you would either have to count it by hand or send the person to the main cage. Later, they added them in the three outlying cages, but they weren't terribly fast or accurate, so if it was just one roll it was usually easier to just count the coins by hand. (If you count the coins two at a time like I did, it doesn't take that long to count to 50, and I knew some cashiers that could count by threes or fives, even.)

That said, I also got written up once for using the coin counting machine too many times in one shift. I wasn't told how many times was "too many". Figure that one out...

There's an unincorporated Lemon, Kentucky, and a city of Lemmon, South Dakota, for the Lymon rip-off.

This was the last time anyone buoyed a print newspaper:

Unfortunately the OP of the original thread doesn't know the correct spelling of the past tenses of buy (bought). Otherwise I would have said "Last Time You Brought a Paper Newspaper".
