Canada's Google Maps works better than the US one

I'm serious. One of our Canadian members posted a street view link which I followed and I then started to navigate when I realized how smooth it was. This is in Chrome too, the browser that usually gives me the worst performance with the new Google Maps. Zoomed out, and the map was just as smooth.I went back to the US one and on Chrome, the map was smooth, but street view was horrible.

I think I'm just going to use the Canadian version from now on. I mean there's virtually no difference (except for the web domain), but it is so much smoother and I only need to use a single browser!

Try it yourself:

Versus:
https://www.google.com/maps/@40.558213,-74.529071,3a,54.2y,23.33h,88.07t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sVRH2TZxBwwZ2j5tVHz3DKw!2e0

I don't know if everyone will have the same result, but I'm curious to see if any other forum members experience any sort of performance increases (or decreases?) on Canada's site versus the US one.

Agreed ... I've been getting lots of blacked out or garbled screens on street view US the past couple of months.  Google Maps ca seems to be running seamless.  Thanks for the heads up on this!

I just tried it and it does work better. Mexico's version is also faster (google.com.mx/maps), but of course everything is in spanish.

Bing Maps has been (horror of horrors) a lot less annoying to me lately than Google has. It seems to have a much better algorithm for finding incomplete addresses. Also, I like that toll roads are a different color than free roads.

You could use the "Classic Google Maps" instead... it's much better. Mind you, you can't see past street view on Classic mode.

First,

Then,

Much better than the terrible Google Maps out now. Don't know if that option is available on the US one though.

Didn't seem to notice much of a difference myself, but then I disable WebGL on all my browsers specifically because doing so makes the new Google Maps usable.  I imagine most people don't do this and have to put up with Google's attempt to build a map platform on a buggy hardware graphics platform.

WebGL: great potential, but more trouble than it's worth, at least for now.

I use US Google Maps, classic (my computer doesn't even support the new one, and uses the old one instead).

Since I only have issues with Google Maps when using my mobile phone, it's no step forward to go to the Canadian full site. The app is still better for mobile use.

I recorded a video that shows the Canadian version clearly out preforming the US one. (Ignore the music... or not, your choice, but I always forget to turn off the recording for it)

You'll see how each click in Canada's version is smooth and responsive. The US one is slow, clunky, and delayed.

You're into UDK? I used to do that stuff. Really enjoyed it until I retired.

Try changing hl=es into hl=en or just delete it. It should appear in English to you. Likewise, since the two links in the first post don't have that string they appeared in Spanish for me despite being the Canadian and US versions.

By the way, here is the very same location on the Spanish Google Maps: https://www.google.es/maps/@40.558213,-74.529071,3a,50.2y,13.62h,83.72t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1sVRH2TZxBwwZ2j5tVHz3DKw!2e0

Please note that I may mention "invalid" FM channels, i.e. ending in an even number or down to 87.5. These are valid in Europe.

Try disabling any extensions you have installed and see if that changes anything. I've found that AdBlock and other low-level extensions like it can cause a lot of lag on Maps.

What I found interesting when trying the Canadian one is that I didn't experience a Street View bug that's been annoying me in recent weeks: With the US site running the new Google Maps, a lot of the time when I click on the little man to bring up the blue lines for Street View, nothing happens when I click on a blue line–instead, the blue lines remain in place and I have to click on the little man a second time, then click again where I want to see Street View. Very strange and I have no idea what's causing it, but in any event it did not happen with the Canadian site.

Thanks for the tip!

Screw Google Maps.  Just use Google Earth.  It's free and so easy to use.

How do you send a link on Google Earth? Even if you could, many members dont have the program. Plus, can you look at past Street view takes on Google Earth?

For most members, it's easier to use Maps.

.....and I just had the same problem using the Canadian site. Darn.

Canada's Google Maps is scaled in km rather than miles (imagine that).  I am not seeing a difference, better or worse, performance-wise between the two.  I think I will stick with the U.S. version, out of convenience.  Thanks for the tip, though ... it's something I never thought of!

Just as delayed with rendering graphics as the regular Google Maps. With the death of the Classic maps today, the frustration level with using Streetview and panning with the satellite imagery on is back to where it was before I bookmarked Classic maps a few months ago.  :banghead:

I guess that's why I couldn't understand all those complaints on AARoads lately... I'm Canadian and the new version works okay for me, even on my 6-year-old computer.
