Longest String of Sequential Route Numbers?

Ga293

As posed on the excellent Twelve Mile Circle Blog, what is the most sequential route numbers you can string together on a single trip? The example the submitter there came up with was:

Most of Kentucky's single-digit routes are clustered in the same general area, but you don't get consecutively-numbered routes intersecting until 9 and 10.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

In MN you have to get to 13 before you get any intersecting consecutive-numbered routes.

MN 13 (St. Paul to Waseca)
US 14 (Waseca to New Ulm)
MN 15 (New Ulm to St. Cloud)

If US 16 were still extant you could have used that where MN 15 would have intersected it near Fairmont for one more leg.

I think the longest trip you could take on three consecutively-numbered intersecting routes here though would be this trip:

MN 27 (Moose Lake to Little Falls)
MN 28 (Little Falls to Glenwood) (clinch)
MN 29 (Glenwood to Montevideo)

Pennsylvania's old legislative routes:

Route 1. From Harrisburg to Sunbury
Route 2. From Sunbury to Danville
Route 3. From Danville to Bloomsburg
Route 4. From Bloomsburg to Wilkes-Barre
Route 5. From Wilkes-Barre to Scranton
Route 6. From Scranton to Honesdale
Route 7. From Honesdale to Milford
Route 8. From Milford to the New York State Line

Delaware's only two significant contributions:

Total of 78.1 miles

DE 12: Whiteleysburg - Felton
US 13: Felton - Harrington
DE 14: Harrington - Milford
DE 15: Milford - Summit Bridge


Total of 70.3 miles (this only uses two routes though so it isn't as impressive)

DE 8: Marydel - Little Creek
DE 9: Little Creek - Wilmington

The highest consecutive US highway 'plex is US 270 and US 271 from Poteau to Wister in Oklahoma.

If you want to be obscure, substitute IL 7 for US 7 in this list.

It's a shame that US 7 doesn't intersect CT/MA/VT 8 (but it comes tantalizingly close!) so we can't continue this string by going to state routes. But we can start a decent new one from there:

VT/NH 9
CT/MA/NH 10
VT/NH 11
CT/MA/NH/VT 12
MA/NH 13

Here's another set of 7:

A70-A71-A72-A73-A74-A75-A76-A77-A78-A79 around Southern Scotland used to be doable, but they curtailed the A73's 'useless multiplex' to the A74 with the A702 leaving a short gap, and the A74(M)-A75 junction is limited access so you can't travel directly between them, needing a B road.

In Washington, 522 thru 527 are all connected, but you can't connect them in order.  Best you can do is 523 -> 522 -> 524 -> 527 -> 526 -> 525.  (Washington doesn't have a chain of more than three that actually meets the thread.)

Plenty of chains of length 3 in Georgia, but surprisingly hard to beat that number.

GA 24-US 25-GA 26-US 27 is the best I can come up with.

While Nevada's numbering puts clusters of numbers together, the number order chosen in some locations makes this exercise much harder than would be ideal. Also, since some areas have intersecting routes between the primary/old FAP highways (0-400s) versus secondary/old state-aid highways (700-800s), there could have been potential for more had all routes been numbered in one system.


I was able to find a few consecutive route intersections between two numbers, but only two instances where three consecutive route numbers string together:

SR 397 -> 398 -> 399. All in & around Lovelock (SR 396 is frustratingly close here, and intersects 398 but not 397).

SR 445 -> 446 -> 447. From Sparks north to Pyramid Lake then east to Nixon

If Google Maps is correct, 14-15-16-17-18-19-20-21 and 37-38-39-40-41 are both possible in Melbourne, Australia, and 1-2-3*-4-5 is possible in Mexico (start in Tijuana).

*There are two different routes numbered MX 3 that intersect MX 2. Only one of them continues the chain.

With roman numerals! In Spain, N-I, II, III, IV, V and VI all used to start in the Puerta del Sol in Madrid. Even to this day, A-1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 still have their milepost zero there, but they don't come together anymore (rather starting at M-30 beltway).

Please note that I may mention "invalid" FM channels, i.e. ending in an even number or down to 87.5. These are valid in Europe.

I used Route 56's site as a reference and it's difficult to find just two consecutive numbers meeting in Kansas. The first consecutive numbers meeting at all that I found is K-68's junction with U.S. 69 at Louisburg. But if you start on 68, then you can take 69 to I-70. But then the only way to U.S. 71 is to leave Kansas.

And that's all you can do, at least two-digit-wise. Most of the one- and two-digit numbers are far apart from each other. I encountered a couple of pairs (such as K-58 and U.S. 59) that are in the same county but don't intersect. And then there are some of those spur routes with two-digit numbers such as K-89. The only other route those such highways intersect don't have a number anywhere close to them (K-89 intersects only U.S. 50).

The longest that I can think of in Virginia is US 1 - VA 2 - VA 3.

I don't think there's any requirement to limit the chain to a single state per OP.

This example may require a time machine:
GA 18, US 19, US 20, old US 21 (current OH 21 doesn't quite reach), US 22, US 23, US 24, OH 25 (old US 25).
Wait, it's all Ohio? Always has been.

It meets GA 18 in Zebulon. That, unfortunately, doesn't make it far enough east to hit either GA 17 or US 17, though.

I've been trying to think of secondary routes that make long strings. Right now I'm stuck at a string of four (Chesterfield County secondary routes 625, 626, 627, and 628)

Oh damn, I did post that one.  Do not know why I came up with that one as the two routes are parallel in transit.

Oh well, I got it up to 7 using all US routes as US 8 is no where's nearby.
