New Flickr uploads...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157633253546432/

A whole bunch of pictures from Kentucky and adjacent parts of Ohio and West Virginia. Included are a lot of pics from my scouting trips to the Ashland meet, and pics from the new alignment of US 68 in Maysville just prior to its opening and just after it opened.

The pics I took on my way to the Ashland meet, plus a few from the meet itself and other pics around Ashland.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157633254775326/

Pictures I took last week en route to Cincinnati (KY 627/US 27 corridor) and a bunch of pics from Cincinnati itself, mostly on the truck route for US 27/127. Lots of old pics, a state-named I-75 shield and a couple of "OH 127" sign goofs.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hbelkins/sets/72157633250302217/

This is why I went to Cincinnati. I rode a Norfolk Southern passenger train from Cincy to Danville, Ky., as part of the Operation Lifesaver Whistle-Stop tour, which was put on to promote safety at railroad at-grade crossings.

New set of Orange Blossom Trail photos of mainly new signs that were just installed from a recent safety improvement project eliminating the center turn lane for a grassy median.

Have to say it ... I hate hate HATE Flickr's new look.

So I may be looking to migrate to a different service.

Yeah, well, at least they allow more photos on a free account (I'm a cheapskate)

I still hate the new instagram-esque style, though.

I don't mind the new flickr interface.  It's like with every design change someone's not going to like it.

Anyways, some photos from various trips in April.

it's significantly slower, burns a lot more memory, and defaults to placing things unintuitively past the first page.  one should not have to explicitly scroll down to read the caption of an image.

also, infinite scroll of search results.  I know this has become popular recently, but it definitely weirds me out.  I think it's because the way I search is to look at the first page of results, right click and open in a new tab all the ones which I think need further investigation, and then have the final right-click-and-new-tab be the next page of results.  with infinite scroll, one loses this ability to have "browse results" and "look at details" be elegantly dovetailed.

also, infinite scroll of search results.

There were days when I'd go onto flickr, type in some search terms (e.g. "NJ" OR "New jersey" AND (road OR route)) and spend the day looking through the tens of thousands of photos people took of Jersey's roads. This was also good since I can set up "marker dates" to save where I was and come back later in addition to filtering out the people with millions of auto-tagged photos. With the new format, I can't do that anymore. (note I don't have a flickr account so I guess it's harder to lodge a complaint to them)

Tough call - i'm guessing they're siding with people who want to see more of a photo - prefer the black backgroun vs. space taken up by captions and what groups they are in, who favorited, comments, etc.

I am sure in a year there will be another reformat.

"who favorited" is an exercise in solipsistic dick-sucking, and the comments on flickr tend to be equally self-indulgent... but I still want to read the original caption!

Probably. Though I note they have fixed it so navigation is at the bottom of the window rather than on the next one.

Most comments in Flickr are Ivy League dissertations compared to YouTube, which is more of a poorly-organized anarchy rally devised under a cheap-beer moonlit night, at its best.

Oh, they probably did it for tablet/smartphone optimization. It's not that bad, honestly...except tablets are one of the worst mediums for uploading photos, since they take average photos at best, and aren't really good at editing photos. Flickr had the same format since I started with it in 2005. Only Google's been that big, that old, and hasn't changed.

New pictures added from Gadsen, AL.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/54480415@N08/sets/7215763411

that link isn't working... must be a new-interface glitch.  but it does helpfully give you a link to "most recent uploads" so it shows your Gadsden stuff.

when I was there, I did not see the button copy for 278/411/431, but did find a yellow stop sign.

new Flickr also takes up gallons of memory.  open up six or seven tabs of image search results, and your Firefox is suddenly running 750MB hotter.

I am glad to hear you say this.  I thought is was only me with this new flickr page layout.  To me I think it is much harder to manage.  The old way was fine, but like everything else when things work fine somebody has to improve it with some new crap just to say that we are moving along or that progress is fulfilled.
