Highway in your state with the furthest terminus

My guesses for Pennsylvania would be I-80 or I-90 (my guess is it's close) and US-6/20/30 (again, close).

JayhawkCO

For Colorado, also U.S. 6 at 2,129.47 to go to get to Cape Cod.  Interstate it's I-70 for 1,488.24 miles to Baltimore.

Maryland.

U.S. highways - clearly U.S. 50, about 3073 miles from near its eastern terminus in Ocean City to Sacramento, California according to this sign.

Interstates - I-70, about 2160 miles from its eastern terminus on the west edge of Baltimore to its western terminus at Beaver, Utah (not Cove Fort) at the junction with I-15 (the sign west of I-695 says 2200 miles, which apparently overstates things a little).

Yes, Maryland would be US 50.  Personally, I interpreted the OP as asking for the mileage after leaving the state until its terminus.

US 50 is ambiguous since it leaves Maryland at Washington DC.  As we all know, after going through Washington, Virginia, and West Virginia, US 50 re-enters Maryland briefly before leaving for good near Redhouse MD.  So do we count from Washington or from Redhouse?

I also wanted to consider US 40 as well.

US 50 state line near Washington -> western terminus = 2867
US 50 state line near Redhouse -> western terminus = 2719
I-70 state line -> western terminus = 2058
US 40 state line -> western terminus = 1980

(Edited to fix punctuation: it's -> its)

dlsterner, great question!

I was thinking count from the time it leaves the state.

With Maryland, the time it leaves the state for the 2nd time.

I *think* US 62 in Texas is still the furthest even after it's 2nd departure from the state

How does I-70 not end at Cove Fort? I guess the terminus is technically a couple miles from the fort site, but that's certainly the closest named place to it. Beaver is another 25 miles away on I-15.

Closest named plate to the western end of I-70 is Cove Fort by an order of magnitude.

NY

Interstate: I-90 2499 miles from NY/PA border to Seattle
US Route: US 6 2860 miles from NY/PA border to Bishop, CA (wins by 21 miles over US 20)
State Route: NY 2 142.3 miles from NY/MA border to Boston.  If you allow for number changes, NY 7 wins going away at 445.9 miles as VT/NH/ME 9 to Calais, ME.
Actually, if you allow for number changes NY 30 wins the state routes with approximately 880 miles to Kegaska, QC on QC 138.  If/when QC 138 gets completed, you'll then have all that additional length, plus all of NL 510 to Happy Valley Goose Bay... which would add over 560 miles.

Beaver isn't even the closest incorporated place to the west end of I-70. It's close, but it looks like Kanosh to the north just barely beats it.

Flint1979

I-70's western terminus is closer to Cove Fort than it is to Beaver. To get to Beaver you have to get on I-15 south.

To make this sporting, how about the furthest terminus for N/S routes as well as E/W?

It's a given the E/W routes are longer, so how about listing the longest terminus to the north or south as well?

Oregon I'm not sure about. I-5 goes on for 796 miles into California but given the way it winds does US 101 have more miles overall?

So for Indiana, the longest distance east is going to be US 6, north is going to be US 31, and south is going to be US 41.
Indiana: counties 100%, highways 100%
Illinois: counties 100%, highways 61%
Michigan: counties 100%, highways 56%
Wisconsin: counties 86%, highways 23%

OK, I can tackle my current state of Maryland.  My first guess was US 1, both to the north and to the south, followed by I-95.  But I would find that the competition was closer than I thought!

For completeness I looked to the east as well (I did the west a few posts back)

From Maryland state line to the south:
US 1 - 1316 miles
I-95 - 1053 miles
US 29 - 1010 miles
US 301 - 964 miles
US 11 - 959 miles (or as high as 1191, depends if you count US 11E and/or US 11W)

From Maryland state line to the north:
US 1 - 972 miles
I-95 - 745 miles

From Maryland state line to the east (only one real choice):
US 40 - 81 miles

From Maryland state line to the west (from previous post):
US 50 - 2719 or 2867 miles (as it leaves Maryland at two separate locations)

As I mentioned, US 1 north out of Georgia is only about 60 miles shorter than US 84 west, so it's a fairly close competition.

US 1 is also the winner going south, 545 miles from the St. Mary's River down to MM 0 in Key West.

Heading east, US 76 continues for 378 miles to Wrightsville Beach, NC.

For Arizona, the surprising answer is US 64, which apparently takes a less direct route to the Atlantic Ocean than either US 60, US 70, or the two Interstates.

North-South, the answer us US 95, whose length outside Arizona is nearly 300 miles longer than that of US 93.

I think US 41 would win in both directions for N/S in Kentucky.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Inspired by the "getting to" posts, what highway in your state (US or Interstate) has the most miles ahead of it after leaving your state?

Example: after leaving Oregon, US 20 still has roughly 2900 miles to go.
US-50 is going to be tough to beat. Only 107 miles in California, over 3000 after you leave.. I am not sure how much of it is in Maryland. If shorter, it would be more still.

US-6 may be even longer than US-50. And less of US-6 than US-50 is in California.

US 6 has about 3,150 miles outside of California and beats out the likes of US 50 and I-80 by a couple hundred miles.

A sizeable portion of that difference can be attributable to the "hump" in UT from Delta up to Spanish Fork and then back down to Green River, plus, of course, the "fishhook" out to Provincetown.

Verlanka

I-10 in Florida. About 2,000 miles away from its western terminus in California.

That and Massachusetts is surprisingly much further east than Maryland is. Ocean City (where US 50 ends) is about the same longitude as Utica, NY.

And extending to Boston certainly helps US 20 maintain its status as the currently longest US highway (along with the long N-S section in WY).
