Exactly.  Can we get this discussion back on topic?  Which, for those who've forgotten, is Snap Map.

I can't tell if I'm making it worse or not. I feel like I started the whole thing with 12/03/20 05:45:02 PM (reply #8 for those who don't put most recent first), but the post I made two posts later is one of the few "safe" posts in the thread.

So apparently by calling out obvious trolling, I'm looking at everything through a COVID lens. Just because like two people didn't follow what I said doesn't mean that I'm looking through a COVID lens. You have to be living under a rock to not know what the current situation is with college students and their partying. Some people don't like it due to COVID.

So in conclusion, I'm sorry for pointing out trolling and looking at everything through a COVID lens, because apparently the alternative is completely ignoring it.

No, we're saying that asking if anyone else uses Snap Map isn't "obvious trolling".

And enjoying watching videos of parties is not the same thing as promoting the disregard of CDC guidelines.  You might as well say he's also advocating binge drinking by his comment.  Yet nobody said that, now did they?
What? Did you read my entire comment? COVID is a major event right now. If someone says something that is quite obivously referring to COVID (or, more specifically, people's response to it), am I just not supposed to say anything even if I want to?

For example, say that somebody makes a post titled "I-95" but their post reads, "Anyone else ever driven I-95? I hate PADOT for designating I-99." It's an only vaguely related but overly specifc example. You think it's a coincidence that colleges are being scrutinized about COVID stuff and that's the specific example that Bandit chose?

Everyone is making it worse. Bandit started it, I called out his trolling, then hbelkins and SectorZ innocently asked what I meant. I stated what I meant, then kphoger went into some weird post about a "COVID lens", I responded to it, said some things that were not called for, and things got completely derailed. I don't think you're the problem, I think it's just the COVID debate happening all over again.

...didn't the original COVID thread get locked?

Do we need another rehashing back and forth thread on COVID?
about that thread:
The mod note (from Alps) said that the thread was "locked for now", but "for now" has been over four months. Similar case with "How has the pandemic affected your perception". Since a mod will probably lock this thread anyways, maybe we could know if that clusterfuck will make a return or not.

OP bandit957/Tim Brown is an "original" roadgeek who makes random posts like this sometimes. Once you get used to it, you'll just learn to ignore it or perhaps find it a little amusing some of the stuff he comes up with because it's way the hell out there. Bubble gum has been a favorite topic of his, many times stories randomly include people chewing gum or blowing bubbles otherwise irrelevant to the rest of the story. Sesame Street will also be prominently featured.

I suspect "for now" is "until it stops being political".

I'm surprised nobody has asked if there are pictures on Snap Map of people whose heads are shaped like Speak n' Spells, or who got gum caught in a Jane child, or something along those lines.

I've been on the forum for almost two years now, so I am familiar with Bandit's randomness. Most of the time I find it amusing, but when it's a clear attempt at getting a reaction from other people I don't like it.

I've gotten used to bandit's threads.  Sometimes he provides that certain 'mental nudge' that changes my mood.  His picture posts revolving around his travels are awesome.  I don't see how any of his original post is trolling, but I wanted to get in and defend him before the thread gets locked.

Maybe my COVID lenses are fogged up, because I didn't see anything COVID-related in the original post. That's why I asked the question. Maybe some people have more sensitive COVID rabbit ears than I do. I saw no trolling whatsoever in his post. That, and I had no clue what Snap Map is. I have Snapchat installed but haven't used it other than to fool around with some of the frames/filters -- and most of those are now available on Facebook Messenger, so i don't know why I keep Snapchat.

I don't care if college students want to have parties. They can make their own desicisions without local politicians and governors breathing down their necks.

They're continuing to have parties, which clearly demonstrates that they can't make good decisions even with politicians breathing down their necks.

Hospitals are near capacity--again. Maybe this seems trivial to you because none of the patients or hospital employees are people you know. Just hope you don't experience any kind of trauma, like a bad car accident, while the hospitals are this full. When you get to the ER, the respiratory therapist who you need to intubate you and is usually stationed in the ER waiting for trauma patients to come in is up in the ICU, because the RTs up there can't keep up. As a result, it takes him/her 3 minutes to get to you instead of 30 seconds, and that might make the difference as to whether or not you survive.  Or maybe the ER nurse that was supposed to help save you quit because he/she had seen too many people die and couldn't take it anymore, and the replacement is someone who has never worked trauma before but that's all the hospital could hire right now.

COVID is a very extreme example of Americans being so bedazzled by the concept of freedom that they just can't avoid doing something that has negative consequences if those consequences aren't immediate. It's the same mindset that leads to smoking, drugs and obesity. Those things won't kill us next week, but when we're on our death beds at age 45 we get upset at everybody but ourselves.

I don't give a fuck if I've hurt anybody's feelings and/or get this thread locked. I'm tired of my wife coming home every morning either crying uncontrollably or screaming at me for no reason because it's her only outlet for the horror she's experiencing at work, because people are too selfish to do what medical experts are suggesting.

I still don't get why harassing the OP over looking at it is justified because of this. You're literally acting like bandit is out partying. So stupid...

My wife works in health care. Never once gone on here politicizing her work efforts.

It is perfectly possible to think someone is making poor choices and yet still advocate for their freedom to make those choices.

Let's not hide behind the phrase, "making poor choices." Making poor choices is doing jagerbombs after drinking a bunch of beer or signing up for a 7:30 am lecture course. What they are doing is causing people to die, and causing serious mental health issues for the people caring for those that are dying, so if you want to advocate for people's freedom to cause death and destruction then have the guts to call it that.

Let's not hide behind "what if".

If everyone at a party is healthy, then they are most certainly not doing any of the things you just accused them of.

Example:  The church Sunday school department I'm a member of–which, other than me, consists entirely of elderly people because my own age group shifted to in-home small groups a couple of years ago and everyone else my age is either occupied elsewhere or just takes a break during Sunday school hour–is having their usual Christmas luncheon at a member's house this week-end.  It's a really big house but, still, there are more than 20 people signed up to attend.  Even if nobody in attendance is sick, you've still just accused each one of them of "causing people to die" and "causing serious mental health issues"–all for having lunch with their life-long church friends.  And if my wife and I were to attend and post about it on Snapchat, then we would be right there in the same category as the Jagerbomb-downing college students as far as anything objective is concerned.

(And don't imagine that these people are somehow isolated from the risks of COVID.  As I mentioned, all of them are elderly.  Some of them have worked or still work in healthcare.  Some of them have underlying health conditions.  At least two of them are currently in self-quarantine for recently having been close contacts, and at least one of them has personally had COVID already.  Other facility-bound members have suffered serious health complications from COVID, with one member recently topping 50 days in the hospital.  They are not ignorant about the virus.  Rather, they are aware of its risks and still decide to gather.  And, although my wife and I have personally chosen not to attend out of caution, I do champion their right to do so.)

There is no way to know if you're healthy or not (unless you've already recovered). It often takes a few days for symptoms to develop.

Unless everyone at a party has not been in contact with anybody outside their household in the past 14 days, they can't be certain they're healthy. How hard is that to understand?
