Then there's the (as I call it) "skinny neck" version

yep, that's the classic wasp-waisted US shield shape, dating back to 1926.  It looks a bit different when the number is the only legend, and there is no border.

Here's a lovely wasp-waisted 14A from South Dakota, next to the more modern-shaped 85.

Adding all the numbers on the previous assembly gives you 18, and here's a US 18/151 assembly

From Ulster County, NY. Trying to photograph as many of these as I can find before they are gone.

that's a sweet US-18.  Have never seen that style for that number ... have seen US-8 and US-53 in Barron County (where old signs go to ... survive), and also US-41, 141, 151 and I don't remember where those are, and US-12 and US-14.  Looking for US-10 and US-61 as those are my two favorite highways in Wisconsin!

continuing to zoom in through the jurisdictions, here is a Town Road 18.  This sign is from Michigan and goes back to the 1930s.

Take the 8 from the end (like the old continuous highway number game) to make the start of:

The highest numbered state route in Tennessee is 840, the highest numbered state route in Washington is 971

sweet lord, the compressed EM font, it makes my eyes vomit.

to that end: here is another hideous example of font misuse.

this one, at least, has the good sense to be in a construction zone.

(okay, njroadhorse posted before I did, but I am keeping the 89 because VT-289 is clearly a branch route of AZ-89! ;) )

I'm elegantly sidestepping the issue of I-69.

The I-96/I-275/MI 14 interchange has three loop ramps and a fly-over ramp, just like the CA 17/CA 85 interchange in Los Gatos, CA (although the fly-over ramp at the California interchange is a right exit).
