Quote from: I-55 on April 13, 2025, 09:39:41 PMThe correct question is "if ARDOT hasn't signed it, why does Google show it?" and the answer as usual is "because Google Maps signs stuff incorrectly all the time"

Mine is probably FM 2279. I'm not a regular connoisseur of FMs so I'd be surprised if there was anything higher.

I've been on Route Z in Missouri. How do you count that?

If sticking with primary routes, IN 912.

And I've been on PP Hwy in Missouri.  Is that higher or lower than Z Hwy?   :hmmm:

I'll say it's higher, because each letter P is the number 210 in my mind

Which matches up with this picture, aka the peak of 'funny' highway number combinations.

For me, probably Virginia secondary 10292 (Nutley St. in Fairfax, between US 50 and US 29), though there are higher numbered SRs in Northern Virginia. Not counting the unsigned fictional 9xxxx numbers devised by VDOT for some Federal Government highways it didn't build and doesn't maintain.

If we're counting unsigned inventory numbers like VDOT's for Federal roads, I can do better with Alaska DOT&PF's inventory numbers for its own roads. The highest, AFAIK, is 299550 (Broadway in Skagway, which is part of signed AK 98). The highest for a road I've driven (and clinched), that doesn't have a signed state route number, is 297050 (Dangerous River Rd. in Yakutat). I might also have driven at least part of 299520 (Skagway-Dyea Road).

The lowest Alaska DOT&PF inventory number is 50000, for a road in Dillingham. All of the five-digit numbers seem to be in isolated western Alaska communities, with no road connections to the continuous North American highway network.

A higher peak of 'funny' than the one in NE2's avatar?

NY Route 987D (reference route), better known as the Saw Mill River Parkway.

I also write this as a fatal single-vehicle accident closed the southbound lanes of the parkway in Yonkers early this morning. RIP to the two teenagers that lost their lives.
Multi-lane roundabouts are an abomination to mankind.

Well, sharing is caring.

Relax, I didn't hit that one until last July...you've got plenty of time (besides, it's multiplexed with other routes the entire way).

I've noticed on a surprising number of these I have the highest numbered state highway, despite not having very much of the state. Seems a pattern that the highest number is either an important road or somehow outside of the state's normal numbering scheme, such that there are increased odds you've driven it over any other randomly numbered state highway.
