- What is the greatest goat of all time?

I just like that searching "famous goats" on Google literally supplied me 20 different answers in the first 20 results.

Which means there is a greatest goat of all time and there is no greatest goat of all time.
TIL: Famous goats exist.

I see the image correctly. I have the "Leave words uncensored" option checked. The host is actually maineanencyclopedia dot com (no "Sault Sainte John Madden" in it).

N.b.: This post only makes sense with that option on.

Mildly interesting: the current populations of SD, NE, KS, and OK, in a row, are slightly less than 1MM, 2MM, 3MM, and 4MM.

South Dakota, at 895,000, is the furthest behind its 1MM boundary, but did grow at the highest rate over the past decade.

I've always thought it's strange that OK's population is higher than KS. Kansas has been around for a lot longer and is, in general, more effectively managed.

I looked up the historical demography of both states.  Kansas did have a larger population than Oklahoma until the 1920 Census.  However, Oklahoma grew extremely rapidly, especially in the first few years of statehood, and the World War I-era oil boom was more pronounced there.

Kansas also had more robust growth from 1930 to 1960:  population increased from 1.9 million to 2.2 million, while Oklahoma stagnated around 2.3 million.  Since then, however, Oklahoma has had consistently higher population growth with each Census with the exception of 1980-1990 (4.0% in Oklahoma versus 4.8% in Kansas).

I'm not sure how to account for the disparity in recent decades, but suspect it has to do with the fossil-fuel energy industry, which is much bigger in Oklahoma on a per capita basis.  Oklahoma has over four times as many barrels of proven oil reserves as Kansas (1.474 billion versus 292 million), and its supply and distribution networks handle more than ten times as much natural gas (2.6 trillion cubic feet versus 152 billion cubic feet).  Both states get almost the same share of their electricity from wind (47% in Kansas versus 44% in Oklahoma).

The energy industry has a way of propping up other sectors of the economy (Wichita owes its aviation cluster to entrepreneurs who made their investment capital in the El Dorado oil fields in the late 1910's and early 1920's), so in Oklahoma I suspect it has helped mask significant problems with rural decline.

The extreme differences that can exist within a county. For example, in the county I live in:

  • Southwest corner: Very dense housing, shopping centers
  • Western Border: Major corporate regional offices, Dallas North Tollway
  • North of US-380: Major transition from dense housing to new housing developments and undeveloped areas
  • Northwest corner: Not much at the moment, although there is sone construction related to the DNT
  • Northeast corner: Mostly farmland with Texas route 121
  • Southeast corner: Mostly farmland with a Buc-ees just south of the county border

Then again, if you look at W Park Blvd in Plano between Alma and Custer, there are two farms completely surrounded by housing.

"Troubleshooted" comes up a lot. Maybe that missing O just looks like a typo.

Takumi

I've only ever used the gerund form, like "they were troubleshooting it" , so I've never really thought about past tense.

StackExchange:  troubleshooted versus troubleshot

Personally, I tend to steer clear of both--the former is awkward while the latter is widely considered questionable.  If I'm describing the outcome of troubleshooting, I tend to use a word like diagnosed.
