I haven't been on the Dulles Toll Road since December. Just saw this picture on Twitter (taken within the last hour as I type this). That Spring Hill Road sign is quite ugly.

With a rare (for Virginia) outlined shield to boot. Definitely don't see new ones like that nowadays.

shiny new signs

have no idea why the signs say Tysons Corner... it should be just Tysons. The new BGSes that went up on I-66 during the pandemic just say Tysons  :pan:

it's a replace-in-kind of a questionable design; the implementation, on the other hand, is total garbage.

Looks like something I'd see in Virginia Beach, honestly. It's ugly.

Looks like the CTB is going to be discussing the Powhite Parkway extension during their meeting next week.

I'm really confused. The action meeting agenda for next week's CTB meeting refers to a proposal to add a segment of VA 288 to the primary system. Apparently somehow the portion of VA 288 in Powhatan County was never added to the primary system? I can't find any details about that.

VA 288 should be added to the interstate highway system, but I'm sure that will never happen. We're not NC  :-D

I mean, it honestly should be, especially considering it was originally planned to seamlessly tie into I-295.

Anyway the US 58 widening/realignment by the South Fork Holston River west of Damascus has been completed.  That definitely explains the US 58 discontinuance item.

So there goes my full clinch of US 58 for the time being.  I do not expect to get to it until my September Nashville trip.

Hmmm. That's an option for my "road tirp fever" (sic) question; however, that section of US 58 is on one of my possible routes to Raleigh, where I might be going for work in September.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Been trying for an hour to view the camera there (for some reason I had to uninstall the VA 511 app and install it again) but as of now the #1 (innermost) lane is open. The resulting backup from the closure is significant, several miles.

Looks like NB is still slow while SB is free flowing.  Definitely not what would be expected on an evening.

Mapmikey

When i drove by about 5:15, NB was solid and at a standstill for almost 10 miles.

The travel time sign here said 109 minutes for 17 miles from Dumfries to the Beltway...

I have a theory on this.  Unfortunately, the new CTB minutes search site doesn't seem to work at all - here it is if anyone wants to try it: https://ctb.virginia.gov/meetings-news/agendas-and-meeting-minutes/agenda-and-meeting-minutes-archive/

The old search site does not seem to work through webarchive...

Anyway, per Kozel's site, VA 288 was initially approved on a routing that did not enter Powhatan County.  Only later did it change to include Powhatan County.

The August 1969 CTB placed the original routing into the primary system - see pg. 25 here: https://ctb.virginia.gov/media/ctb/meeting-archives/meeting-archive-before-2001/ctb-archives-pdf/CTB-08-1969-01.PDF

When they adjusted that routing to the current routing in 1988, they made no mention/adjustment to the primary system.  Thus Powhatan County was never given its VA 288 mileage in the primary system.  See starting on pg. 4 at https://ctb.virginia.gov/media/ctb/meeting-archives/meeting-archive-before-2001/ctb-archives-pdf/CTB-08-1988-01.PDF

This is interesting but if I had to guess I would say that this theory is correct. I just wonder how it got missed, but also why all of the sudden in 2024 does it come to be something on the CTB agenda? That is the more puzzling part to me.

That makes sense, though it's weird that on the route logs, traffic data, and the ArcGIS site that piece has always been shown as primary.

Yes, it does still exist.

Not only that, but this region is one of the last in the country that still have coin baskets.

Interesting to note then Virginia DOT posted their own streetview as a third party on GSV like this shot of VA-234.
