Minor things that bother you

Minor thing that bothers me right now: You go downstairs planning to watch a game on the big TV and as you start down the stairs, your nose informs you that your cat chose that very time to take a massive stinky dump. (Thankfully, the game isn't for another 20 minutes and the combination of scooping the box, sprinkling deodorizer on it, spraying Lysol, and running the exhaust fan seems to have remedied the situation.)

Her timing was almost uncanny.

My wife fed our dogs potatoes with egg yesterday and didn't tell me.  It didn't sit well with three of the four which left me having to deal with most of the aftermath.

Quote from: vdeane on March 15, 2025, 04:32:35 PMGot a piece of mail marked "unable to forward/for review".  It's addressed correctly and I don't have a forward, so this is very concerning, especially as my mail has been quite light as of late and it feels like I'm might be missing some things.  And good luck contacting the post office about it; the online forms don't have anything for this particular scenario and I've been on hold for half an hour.

A couple of months ago, our rent check came back as undeliverable.  So we sent another one, and it came back the same way.  It turns out we had our landlords' address wrong.  They moved years ago.  Apparently, the post office has had no problem correctly delivering it to them with the wrong address until now.

The forwarding order might have expired.

No.  They moved from Kansas to Utah.  We had one digit of their house number wrong.  And it went to them correctly every month for quite a few years until just recently.

Maybe the neighbor who was getting them got sick of having to hand deliver and started putting "return to sender" on them?

Except, if a neighbor had been hand-delivering our rent check to them for that long, then our landlords would have already known why that one didn't reach them.

True. Maybe their postal worker changed and the previous had recognized the last name and so took the time to deliver it to the right place. The new person might have not wanted to go through the legwork.

I don't think DOGE has acted upon USPS yet, but it's possible that a similar agency initiative declared getting Kyle's rent check delivered to be "waste, fraud, and abuse".

This one comes from my mother: movies showing pregnant women lying on their backs. Doing that would cause the fetus to weigh down on one's arteries and cut off blood circulation

I think of the historical term for rulers of Venice, but then I've always found history interesting.

Elon Musk intentionally chose the name DOGE as a reference to that meme—he is heavily involved in the Dogecoin cryptocurrency that uses the shiba inu as a mascot. (Of note is that the name "Department of Government Efficiency" is intentionally incorrect, to produce the desired acronym—it isn't legally a department, which would require it to have a Senate-confirmed secretary, thus why its legal name is "U.S. DOGE Service".) I have not seen any conclusive proof that the President is aware of this.

My mind always sees "DODGE" when I scan through articles and posts that mention DOGE.  Probably speaks to how much more automotive content I consume over politics.

I used to have a coworker and roommate who grew up in Peru.  His parents had a used car dealership there.  He has a childhood memory of wondering why everyone mispronounced "Dodge".  Obviously, in his childhood mind, it should be pronounced /ˈd̪oðxe/, not /dɑːdʒ/!

How long before the little guy in German pedestrian signals is added to the USA's MUTCD?

Did the ampelmannchen spread outside of East Germany?

Like with permissive 'red turn on red', he has spread all over the former West.

Yea, in Germany, the 'permissive' sign is a small black tab with a green arrow emblem that is mounted next to the red signal aspect.  Before that, the former West Germany was like NYC in regards to RTOR.

Websites where you spend all this time entering information, then you get to the payment page, and it just won't load anything useful so you can't complete your transaction. I'm applying for my Electronic Travel Authorization to Kenya, and I spend 20 minutes uploading all the forms and whatnot, and then the payment page basically has no fields to enter and no links to click on. Super.

That is what NYC is like though.
