Quote from: ZLoth on March 24, 2025, 11:50:57 AMI'll say it before, and I'll say it again... if your audio from your device can be heard by others in a public place, and it isn't a ringtone or a notification beep, IT'S TOO DAMN LOUD. I have observed the following:
  • Someone watching a video without any headphones in a restaurant. This person was a over-60 person.
  • Someone who is wearing headphones, but I still could heard the music. This was a person in their 20s, and I could already see hearing aids in the future.
This is why I now carry earbuds in my pocket when I go out, but since they are noise cancelling, I don't hear someone when they call my name. At least I have the decency to say that I'm wearing noise cancelling headphones.

What really bugs me is the fact that people insist on having conversations while they are taking a dump, trying to check out at the store, or anything else where third parties can overhear the discussion.

The old IT guy at work was infamous for trying to engage people in conversation while they were using the restroom.  He tried it on me once.  In response I told him that I wasn't having a conversation while taking a leak because it was weird.  Dude was kind of taken aback by what I said and left the restroom.  He never tried to talk to me in the restroom thereafter.  I guess score one for being tactful.

Head partner at a law firm I worked at used to do this.  Awkward.

I feel like this is only allowed when half-crocked at a sporting event.

The guy I'm referring to would never be seen a sporting event.  It more a case of someone not understanding social boundaries coupled with nobody being willing to call him out on it.  I'm sure my response was embarrassing, it was intended to be.

This person I speak of was often on the phone with his boss while taking a dump in the stall.  I walked into the restroom on that numerous times.  Better than in person I suppose but I would imagine the farts and echos got picked up over the phone.

To me I don't use my phone when I drive.   I look later at call log to see who tried to contact me.

It's safer that way.

I don't even like to change stations on the radio while driving either.  That quick second can distract my concentration. I wait till on an open road or use the scroll on the wheel to manually go up the saved list

They replaced the $20 worth of complexity with a 8" video screen and bluetooth that connects to your phone, everyone else's car in the phone, and anyone's phone near your vehicle at a red light.

I was particularly interested to learn about why Nissan needs data on the sex habits of drivers.  I don't think there is an actual reason other than "because we can."

Thing that I can't wrap my mind around though is how does a car collects data on sexual habits?  Are there sensors in the seats?  If so, who would have sex in a Nissan product?

That microphone over the seat makes me think of what Alexa does.

I've heard stories about people in their home discuss going to a flea market ( in front of Alexa of course) and the day of the event the phone gps is giving out directions to the flea market.

I'm also wondering why it is that sex habits specifically are what is coming under fire here. Presumably, the car is listening to everything you say. Is it not a concern that other, perhaps far more sensitive information could be obtained?

Or does the car have a sensor that begins listening when and only when it detects conversation about sexual activity, or, . . . you know . . .

All in all, that was one of the weirdest articles I have ever read.

The focus on sex habits is probably because that's one of the few things that pretty much nobody is interested in a corporation having access to. (Also because, as I alluded to upthread, if you are LGBT then having a record of that anywhere the government can easily subpoena it can be anxiety-inducing.)

Scott5114

Etsy has a feature where if you enter your shipping address zip code, it will autofill the city and state for you. Since this presumably uses a USPS database, it does it in USPS's preferred all-caps style.

A lot of people these days use phones to order goods from Etsy. Phone autocorrect can be, um, hit or miss. In particular I notice it struggles with capitalization. Many times I have to fight with my phone trying to strip capital letters out of proper nouns because, well, they're not usually, but in this particular context, say, a street name, it is. It's normally good at getting proper names right, though.

So put that all together and you sometimes get the most infuriating address format possible, consisting of three lines with wildly different capitalization styles:

Because the sales price of a car has little to do with the cost of production.

Uh...what? The price of any good has mostly do with the demand for the product. Unless we are talking about price gauging in times of scarcity, like in the aftermath of a natural disaster, thats hardly immoral.
