If that doesn't motivate you to step up your fire safety game, I don't know what will.

Quote from: roadman65 on March 22, 2025, 07:05:05 PMMacy's in Center City Philadelphia closes tomorrow and today is the last time their organ will be played as they're hosting an all day concert to honor the worlds largest pipe organ.

Once the store closes nobody knows yet what will become of the store and the iconic organ.

That sounds like nobody knows if this is the last time the organ will be played.

Perhaps that Macy's will become an organ donor.

Back when Radio Shack still operated franchises.

Did anyone actually buy one of those fireman hats with the light on top?

Not me, but I worked at one of the (evil) Key Bank processing centers in an old department store building in Downtown Cleveland where there was a weirdo lady om charge.of building safety who loved to do "frequent" fire drills where we would have to evacuate the building.  So much so, she would wear one of those Fire Hats during the drills...

If that wasn't crazy enough, if you weren't out of the building within a certain amount of time, you would have to wear a sticker on your shirt the rest of the day saying "deceased".

I always wondered if you could go home for the rest of the day if you were "deceased"???

OMG!  That sounds like it could have been an episode of The Drew Carey Show, with Mimi running the fire drills.  "You're finally dead, pig!"  :)
"Oh, so you hate your job? Well, why didn't you say so? There's a support group for that. It's called "EVERYBODY!" They meet at the bar." -- Drew Carey

Again, I would STRIVE to wear the "deceased" sticker for the rest of the day just to annoy the wierdo safety lady.

It would be an expensive donation  :bigass:

That organ is made of 2,800 pipes. It's nearly impossible to move.

The Hudson Bay Company is in rough shape. They'll be liquidating all but 6 of their stores:

It's sad to see such an old Canadian institution on its last legs, but the stores have been in rough shape for a while, so it's not surprising.

Even worse is that they're a major mall anchor store in Canada. All three of the malls in Waterloo Region have a Bay store. I wonder if any retailers will take on their large spaces (our malls seem to be quite busy, so I'm hopeful they can do something with the space).

Rothman

I do like the memes of the First Nations offering to buy Hudson Bay for some tobacco and blankets.

The existence of the company predates the United Kingdom, much less the Dominion of Canada itself. That's whack. Hate to see it go.

Amazon is kicking the crap out of malls and retail.

I saw Walmart has abandoned some stores. The fad of the nineties is exhausting.

Walmart has a long history of abandoning stores in favor of another store, often in the next town over, where they can get a tax break.

Almost poetic justice in a sense.

Also sad to see Hudson Bay on the brink, even if they've been declining like most department stores.

And apparently selling all that data to recoup losses.

Unfortunately with that business model...you do a 23 and me, but no need for a 24th.

I heard a new High School might occupy the defunct Sears in Santa Monica, CA.

Don't know the validation of that, but interesting change if it's true.

Edit: is partially true.  It will be temporary.

Dog N Suds used to have 650 restaurants in 38 states and is now down to only 12 total restaurants. With only 2 operating left in Michigan 1 in my hometown of Montague, and one by Norton Shores that just opened back up for the first time in many years.

The Dog N Suds in Richmond, IL is the site of the infamous "STOB" sign that gets posted in Facebook sign groups every few months. It's also the only location I've been to. The hot dogs were good enough to make me overlook the MUTCD non-compliance.

Dog n Suds sounds like a combination hot dog stand and laundromat.

From what I can tell, it's actually quite close to that, with it providing two unrelated services. The only difference is that the suds go on the car, not the clothes.
