All cuts through mountainsides in Appalachia need to extract a sufficient amount of marketable coal to pay for that section of highway construction.  Bonus if you can make candles out of it.

Quote from: I-55 on April 13, 2025, 09:39:41 PMThe correct question is "if ARDOT hasn't signed it, why does Google show it?" and the answer as usual is "because Google Maps signs stuff incorrectly all the time"

All Interstate-standard highways in areas that receive more than 20 inches of snow annually shall be jointed plain concrete pavement, so that after five full winters, drivers can enjoy the same up-and-down exhilaration experienced by a person operating a Wave Runner.

On a random day every month, cargo aircraft are required to perform landings on every 5 miles of curved interstate, since runways rarely have curves, and the pilots need the practice.

No drivers exam should ever take place on an interstate highway, leaving people to endless argue about etiquette pertaining to merging and keeping right.

While the repeal of the NMSL mostly left interstate speed limits up to the states, four-lane interstates are still required to set the speed limit for trucks in the left lane at just barely above however fast the trucks in the right lane are going.

They were worried they'd run out of numbers in the 400's if all those routes were upgraded to freeways.

Mike Harris admired the late Harry Flood Byrd and decided to honor him by imitating the Byrd Road Act.

Ontario had too much money and decided to dispose of some of the excess with highway-related bureaucracy and signage changes.

Due to the National requirement of the metric system, when the parliament demanded "kilometerage", they found there was no such definition, and thus the downloading of provincial highways could not be recovered after disposal, until Canadian dictionaries could be amended. Since there are two National languages, neither side is budging and thus, the routes stay hidden from view.

Someone from the province's DOT secretly took a trip to Indianapolis and liked the idea of a mileage cap so much that they brought it back across the border.

John Denver was cremated and his ashes scattered in the Rocky Mountains. Therefore, the closest hub city to Denver is Denver, Colorado.
