And there are some who would argue that that's not real cheese.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Including the FDA.
Yes, you have to call it "cheese food". Well, I wouldn't feed that crap to my pet cheese.

Quote from: freebrickproductions on September 17, 2025, 03:18:43 AMJust realized, I don't think I've ever shared this here before. It's a pretty normal modern yield sign, if vandalized with spray-paint, but I don't think I've ever seen one covered in cheese slices before.

Cheese by freebrickproductions, on Flickr

Neither the cheese nor the crossbuck exist anymore, CSX upgraded that crossing to gated signals a couple of years after that picture was taken. It still remains one of the strangest things I've seen while out railfanning though.

I wonder if those holes are from birds pecking at it. Doesn't look like swiss cheese.

There were a bunch of ants crawling all over it, so I imagine those holes were from where the slices were being picked apart by them.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Two US 15 shields on the h e Exit 5 guide is odd.  Just use one and a US 11 Northbound shield and free up space.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

This sign does something similar, though it's temporary (one is greenout over BL 81).

NEW! North Truck NY 429:

Not a sign, but I liked this pedestrian gate facing one way and the signals facing another in Malverne, NY:

A Welcome to Ocean Beach sign (NY) on streets that don't see that many vehicles:

Welcome to Kismet, NY sign, along with ordinances:

In Kismet, one must pedal only:

Speed limit 8 on Lighthouse Road between Saltaire and Kismet, NY:

Wonder if the school bus still runs along Lighthouse Road...

Targeted Speed Limit 40 Area in Shelter Island, NY:

The Welcome to NY sign in Port Jefferson, NY due to its ferry to Bridgeport, CT:

Meh, perhaps not that unique, but TRUCK NY 25:

Some interesting stop lines in Kensington, NY (the intersection is strange, but I think one of the lines could have been left out, at least):

I guess that the NEW banner has not been removed.  It was definitely there when we had the Buffalo Meet a couple years ago.

Even the NEW! IMPROVED! gets removed from the laundry detergent box faster than that.

I wonder what lasts longer: the "new" banner on that sign, or "please listen carefully, because our menu options have recently changed."

When I was poking around in GSV because of a different thread, I found this sign.  How common is this?

https://maps.app.goo.gl/ijvVFzCiSpE5dmmB6

(Interestingly, I can't find a subsection (g) in the regulation itself.)

(Interestingly, I can't find a subsection (g) in the regulation itself.)

Subsection (g) used to read as follows:

          (g) You must not operate except as allowed in special use areas established by an authorized official under subpart E of this part 423.

This particular rule appears to have been removed about 2016 when the rules for Small Unmanned Aircraft (ergo, mini-drones) and the rules for Model Aircraft Operations were revised in a sweeping regulatory reform that modified a bunch of regulations that weren't previously coordinated with each other.  Check this out if you understand any of these regulations (I thought I did, but my foray into model aircraft was shortlived).

Traffic light: much closer than a mile

Good old West Virginia.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/E6Tto6YjeWYqjuBU6

Looking around some, I'm not sure if the road before that sign qualifies as a freeway either. :pan:
West Virginia has an odd definition of "freeway" that includes divided highways with at-grades for some reason.  It probably works fine for, say, Corridor H, but this part of US 340 has a ton of lights and no interchanges.
There are two common definitions of freeway. The one in general use applies to fully controlled access roads, while the more legalistic definition applies to roads that abutters have no access rights to. They're free of driveways, but not public cross streets. US-395 in California's Owens Valley has lots of these signs on its wire fences:

But END FREEWAY signs should, and normally do, refer to the first definition.

I saw this on US 16 at the Wyoming-South Dakota state line, on the Wyoming side

At one point in time, ADOT (Arizona) used to manufacture some of the best freeway signs in the United States. In the past couple of years, either someone at ADOT can't tell the difference between Series F and Series EE(m) lettering, or a contractor is struggling with the same concept.

These two new signs are on I-10 Westbound just NW of Tucson.  Also of note is the poor kerning, the variations in letter sizing in "Rd" and the inconsistency of fractions.

Here's another gem from the project. The layout doesn't follow ADOT's design manual (Rd should be on a separate line) and the "H" symbol is embedded and in white on green.  More Series F mystification.  This photo is from Google Maps but I confirmed the sign's continued existence yesterday.
