Sure there is; it sounds like someone falling from an open window.

There's "blyat", but that means something very different.

Quote from: mgk920 on December 27, 2025, 12:59:00 PMWISN (1130am) is the highest rated radio station in the SE WI market using local programming during the drive times.  I do agree with the other thoughts of I(heart) selling it off.

Mike
I get they have a local show in the morning with formally Jay Weber and in the afternoon with Dan O Donnell. But why is the late morning slot local? Should have never been given to Benjamin Yount and now he is in the prime morning time. Should have given that to Jason Groch and let the late morning slot be national. Benjamin Yount is not talk show host material.

Quote from: kphoger on January 02, 2026, 02:16:59 PMThis forum is basically the only engagement I have with online roadgeekery.  In what ways is A.I. slop coming in and being defended?

AI is strictly prohibited in the Facebook groups that I created (Old Highway Alignments, Sign Errors, Button Copy, Historic Road Signs, Map Scans, Road Enthusiasts, Highway Ends and a few more that aren't nearly as popular. Notice that I'm not very creative when it comes to naming groups.) I have been adding a rule to the groups that says that AI is off-limits. Depending on what kind of mood I'm in or who posts the offending material, one offense can lead to a ban. AI hasn't yet become a problem in any of the groups, but when it does, it will be taken care of swiftly and with no fanfare. AI is the devil, and it is having an overwhelmingly bad effect on the world and it's only going to get worse.

Which group and what post? Was it the fake Mississippi route markers? That would have been an instaban in the groups I help run.

One thing that really annoys me is the fact that most of the old Tom From Ohio posts are lost to time. I made those posts using an anonymous remailer because I wanted to keep my identity a secret because I thought it was funny when everybody would guess his identity. I don't know of any Usenet servers that archived these posts.

Interesting contrast between the anti‑AI absolutism and the nostalgia for anonymous remailers and identity‑play and sockpuppeting. Internet history has a long memory.

It's always interesting which technologies get moralized and which get grandfathered in. Anonymous remailers were once the 'AI' of their day.

The fact that the only way to open the trunk of my vehicle is via a powered switch or the remote keyfob; there is no keyed entry to the trunk of my car.

If your battery is dead and the jumper cable or your jump-starter is in the trunk, you're screwed.

Not all cars have folding rear seats. Mine doesn't. It has a pass-through hatch behind the rear center armrest, but that's all. My dashboard trunk release button is not powered, though, so it would work if the battery were dead even though there is no keyed entry to the trunk.

Yes, I'm aware remailers weren't search engines. The comparison was about culture, not code.

Literalism noted. The analogy was about social dynamics, not technical specs.

FYI, there are thousands of archived m.t.r posts online in and about Tom From Ohio.

The internet has a long memory.

Not an equivalency -- a comparison of social reactions. Different technologies, same moral panic pattern.

Moral panic?  Nah, I just like bots ripping off our page or anyone else's.  To that end I am not particularly inclined towards allowing use of algorithms like that in my groups.  If the technology improves to the point where doing things like stealing/counterfeiting content is no longer easy, then I will be willing to reconsider my stance.

Jesus, did someone report that line of discussion? I mean I guess it was political, but literally nothing I said couldn't have also been said by George W. Bush. It's pretty objective geopolitics that you don't threaten an ally with military aggression just to pump up your ego.

Quote from: mgk920 on January 07, 2026, 10:12:00 AMA mechanical key hole for the trunk lid should be mandatory.

The mechanism of the trunk release button gets stuck on my car, which I discovered right after I bought it, such that, if I open the trunk by using the button on the dashboard, then it might not latch shut again when I close it.  Therefore, ever since learning that, I only ever use the key to open the trunk.  Which is annoying if I forget to open the trunk first before starting the car...

Touché.

It just speaks volumes about the current state of the world if people are getting upset over the most milquetoast takes like "don't invade Greenland, it's a bad idea." These wouldn't have been controversial statements for the past 80 years, and they shouldn't be today.
