NHDOT is proposing to raise the toll rates at the toll plazas to curb the $400 million shortfall, but the governor said, "No."

The last time that it was raised was in 2007.

I typed this on Discord, which got no response so far. Since the forum has a larger userbase than Discord, maybe someone could answer it here.

Where does NH 111A end in Exeter?
  • AARoads Wiki says NH 111 in text and NH 27 in the image. This was most likely written this way back when it was on Wikipedia.
  • NHDOT road inventory gives no information, since it only lists the "main" one when there's more than one, and the NH 27/111 (no A) overlap only lists 27.
  • Travel Mapping says 27.
  • GSV signage from August of this year shows no indication of a 27/111A overlap anywhere. That said, there is no route signage at all where 27 meets 85 or 111, even though 111 turns there and it would pretty essential to have signage there. Older GSV imagery shows nothing different, with the exception of one direction in the 27/111 intersection in 2008 that still doesn't show 111A (or mainline 111 for that matter).

So essentially the only evidence that 27 and 111A do overlap are the wikitext prose and the concept that an alternate route should meet with its parent. Everything else says 111A ends at 27 with no overlap.

All-Electronic Tolling is coming to the F.E. Everett Turnpike

Starting January 8, 2026, at 10:00 PM, toll booths in Bedford will begin transitioning to an All-Electronic Toll (AET) system in both northbound and southbound directions. Crews will be working through the winter and spring and removing the toll booths shortly after.

Have the other toll plazas been converted to AET, or will they? It's a good idea due to the crashes, especially at Hooksett.

As of the writing of this message, only the Dover and Rochester Toll Plazas on the Spaulding Turnpike have AET gantries. Not sure what the plans are for the Hooksett Main and Ramp, as well as Hampton Main and Ramp Toll Plazas so far.

Apparently, the NH Governor's Advisory Commission on Intermodal Transportation (GACIT) officially adopted NHDOT's Draft Ten-Year (2027-2036) Plan that includes funding for an exit renumbering project in 2036 at it's meeting yesterday (12/17). There were apparently no comments for or against the project at the public meetings or sent via email.

NHDOT's Ten Year plan website is at: https://www.dot.nh.gov/projects-plans-and-programs/ten-year-plan

The Ghostbuster

So, exit renumbering is a go (in 10 years)? I think the conversion should happen sooner.

vdeane

Still has to make it through every update to the plan between now and then; still, I'd like to think that removing a project already on it is a bigger ask than preventing a project from getting on it, but you never know these days.

Drove through Manchester earlier today and there was a VMS on I-293 announcing this.

Well, the draft list came out on December 29, 2025, and one caught my eye that was removed from this:

Removal of Statewide 40915 – Exit sign renumbering on Tier 1 Roadways

So... it looks like the current governor is not interested in changing the exit numbers, just like the previous governor!

Well, that's interesting given that @bob7374 had previously posted that it survived.  Does the governor have multiple veto points, or was that before the veto opportunity?

Honestly, these gubernatorial vetos are getting ridiculous, and I can't help but wonder if NHDOT is colluding with the governor's office so they can tell FHWA "well, we tried" while in actuality not moving forward with it.  It would explain why this always happens and why the exit numbering is always so far back in the plan before the veto happens.

The people in the GACIT have their recommendations on what projects to add, remove, or reinstate to the 10-Year plan, and the ONLY project that got removed was (of course) the exit renumbering on Tier 1 roadways.

Passed through the Bedford tolls yesterday and they are still completly intact.  I would think they would pull a MassDOT and get at least a couple of them removed quickly, but no such luck.  A few lanes through them are open, and some lanes have the red X.  Signage just consists of the purple "EZ-PASS" variety, but no permanent signs saying "ALL ELECTRONIC TOLLING", outside of portable VMS/DMS units.

So, New Hampshire's exits are going to remain sequentially numbered forever (like Delaware's Interstates)? I doubt there will be any pushback from the feds.

Seems like it.  It's a real shame too, since they're perfect for mile-based and have a ton of suffixed exits already from where they were added.  They could easily be the poster child for why NOT to use sequential exit numbers (them and the Thruway).

SB627: Relative to toll rate adjustments, E-Z Pass customer discounts, and the acquisition and improvement of portions of Interstate Route 93 to support the New Hampshire turnpike system and the 2027-2036 ten year transportation plan.

Looks like New Hampshire will be joining the party in terms of charging in-state E-Z Pass rates vs. out-of-state E-Z Pass rates!

If passed and signed into law, the out-of-state E-Z Pass rate will be higher than for people who live in NH.

We really, really need a federal law banning this practice.

You can get away with that when taxing hotels, because it does apply to in-state people using the hotels, even though they use them nearly as much as out-of-staters. But I think this could be overturned in the courts because it specifically taxes interstate commerce.

Unfortunately this isn't considered a tax so I doubt there's much that can be done at a federal level about it. I do wish the IAG had put a prohibition into its bylaws when it was started, but I don't think they had the slightest inkling about something like this when the group was created 35 years ago.

If they can mandate interoperability (although that really should have had teeth) in the highway bill, then they can do this.

A couple points:

NH hasn't offered any E-ZPass discount to out-of-state tagholders since at least 2020. The out-of-state rate is currently the same as the cash rate. See note at bottom of toll rates [PDF].

This bill does not change the status quo in that regard. What it does do is introduce a monthly cap of 40 transactions for in-state E-ZPass tagholders.

Also the Governor opposes this bill and intends to veto it if it passes.
