The question I'm surprised nobody has actually asked you is what exactly wrong with a woman having tattoos?

Nobody should think there is anything wrong with a woman having tattoos. Now, if having tattoos is a turn-off for you from a physical standpoint, that goes in the same category as not being turned on by certain hair colors, skin tones, or body shapes. The characteristics that get our hormones going vary by person. I think sometimes as hetero men we have a hard time separating a woman's value to society from her attractiveness to us specifically.

Yes, that all sounds very logical.

Thing is the guy we are talking about also claimed to have been in relationships with women who were 24 and 29 years younger than him.  Let us "assume" for a second that those two claims are true for second (quite the leap IMO).  Are we to believe that either if either of those two younger women had a tattoo or incorrect piercing then Beltway would have been fully repulsed?

Quote from: Bobby5280 on April 11, 2026, 09:34:14 PMRegarding tattoos (as well as piercings) they're so common now that there's really no counter-culture shock value to them anymore. They represent their own kind of conformity.

This fortuitous timing in the comics is a day late, because it had to wait for the bigger strips on Sundays.  Tattoos are now a permanent stamp of conformity, not defiance.

https://www.gocomics.com/nonsequitur/2026/04/12

The only thing worse than a conformist is an anti-conformist.  By doing the opposite of what the crowd does, he's still controlled by public sentiment, but he gets to be smug about it because he believes he's doing his own thing.

I have two tatoos. My wife has four. My son and daughter in law have a bunch of them. None of us got them to be anti-conformist or whatever. We got them because they represent something meaningful to us.

Max Rockatansky

I only have one tattoo and wife has three.  I'm open to getting to more tattoos but nothing really has come to mind which catches my interest.  My wife wants to get a mutual tattoo but we can't seem to come up with a good idea for one.

Quote from: Bobby5280 on April 12, 2026, 03:33:23 PMWomen getting tattoos is nothing new either. It might have seemed unusual in the 1980's or earlier. By the 1990's it was growing fairly common.

Today it seems like almost every adult woman under the age of 50 has at least one or more tattoos. Two of the three female co-workers at my workplace have visible tattoos on arms or legs. Most of the women I see working out at the gym have visible tattoos. I know some devoutly religious/conservative people who have tattoos. Men and women alike.

Apparently the tattoo removal business is booming though. So maybe there is a tidal shift in culture starting to take place regarding tattoos. Still, as a single man, I'm not going to make a rule for myself to not date a woman if she has tattoos. That dating pool would shrink to a really small number.

I don't know.  Tattoos have certainly become more popular over the past bunch of decades, but I've seen women with tattoos my entire life.

I find claims of a "downward moral spiral" to be greatly exaggerated and more of a willful blind-eye towards the entirety of society over time.

Frankly, I think we bottomed out in about 1969 and just stayed at that level, all things considered.

The woman I referred to with large major tattoos did them well -- interesting designs, good color work -- and she was in her early 20s when I was mid‑50s. This was a large contemporary church with among other offbeat things had  a motorcycle ministry; you'd see 30+ Harleys outside every Sunday. I almost bought a Kawasaki 900 myself just to ride with the group.

I didn't try to date her even though I found her attractive and interesting. There were plenty of guys already trying.

The age‑gap relationships I mentioned were real, yes.  They have nothing to do with whether tattoos are or aren't a turn‑off. Attraction isn't a universal rule you apply to every person you meet. Preferences aren't moral judgments, and they don't retroactively bind every past relationship. They're just preferences.

I've also seen the opposite in my extended family -- tattoos done impulsively or without much planning, and the result wasn't flattering. Quality varies a lot.

Bottom line with tattoos: quality matters.

Or did she just have a really big tattoo of Major Houlihan?

I've dated 47 women across a pretty wide range of ages and ethnic backgrounds, so "being enjoyable to be around" clearly wasn't a barrier.

Anyway, that has nothing to do with the point about tattoos -- which was simply that quality varies.

Certainly is to me.  I thought it was hilarious when I made my cousin from Haymarket sick to her stomach on the one lane part of CA 236.

It seems like Beltway pulled a Motte and Bailey on us here. Originally the claim was that any women with tattoos and piercings were not good partners, now it's just those with poorly-done tattoos.
